For those who oppose the use of padding to absorb the shock of recoil try a few shots without a shirt. Yes, take off you shirt and T shirt and get the full effects of what that wimp rifle has for you. First, you will pick up your pulse beat that causes the crosshairs to jump each time the heart beats. In addition to reducing the felt recoil the padding cushions the pulse beat and permits you to better aim the rifle. I don't know how much less big men feel pain or suffer from recoil but It just don't make sense to me to put my body in harms way. If I get a headache I will take a tablet to get rid of it. I don't like pain and I bruise easily at my age. A good recoil pad, a folded towel, or a shooting jacket not only decreases felt recoil but it increases accuracy. Common sense should declare this whole subject settled. Take care of your body.

Mr. Ben,
I did that bare chested and sitting on the ground, when I did my penetration test with the 400gr Buster bullet, 41 pounds of recoil got my attention Even with ear muffs and ear plugs the blast in that barn was something to remember. It was 97 degrees outside. While I have nothing to back it up, I think slender folks, should be able to handle recoil, better than, heavy thick shoulder folks. Just my humble opinion

Everyone makes excellent points, in the end, its what you are comfotable with, If I could only have one rifle for playing around with {I can't afford one, or ammo at 10 dollars a shot] It would be a Westley Richards double in .470, it is a thing of beauty, when you shouder it, it becomes part of your body. Great fun. But at my age open sights are a no go. So I have my two Savages, If I ever shoot another deer, my .45 is perfect, Larger game my .50, will that anything I actually hunt for and those that I day dream of hunting but never will.
