I have on occasion heard/read where Cayugad mentioned that shooting one or more of his good rifles - it gets 'boring' to a certain extent...
Well, today I can really report to you that I had such an experiance this morning. I had already mentioned that i was going to take my SS Omega to the pit to shoot next, which I did, but I really expected an order of Lehigh bullets to get here before i went. Well, here in Moscow, Idaho we are on the end of the stage coach run... anything you would expect on a given day you need to add at least one day for UPS/Fed Ex to get here. Everything goes to Spokane, Washington and then is repacked re-shipped down the 90 miles to Pullman, Washington then repacked into a route truck and then over to Moscow. Normally it is no big deal but we had a Holiday on Monday that further confused the issue. So... I did not get my expected shipment, it will show up this afternoon I am 4 sure since i got ancy and shot this morning.
Nothing much to talk about as I took the Omega and the bullets I had and headed out. I got there early enough to have the rock pit to myself for about a half-hour before another shooter showed and asked if we could share.
I set out 6 pigeons on the rock wall @ 100 yards. Walked back to my portable bench. I decided that I was going to shoot the Lehigh .452/250 grain bullet in a HPH-24 sabot pushed by 110 grains of T7-2f. I was using a 3x9x40 Bushnell Elite 3200 with a ballistic reticule and a 25 acp ignition source. I loaded the first shot picked out a bird, sat the bottom of the bird on the cross hair and touched it off, did not even wait for the smoke to clear got up and walked back to the tailgate to load another round. When i did looked down range - I was surprised the bird was still there!!! OK - I thought that was on a clean bore with a bit if Montana X-treme BC in/on the bore... so I thought OK that one slipped out on an oiled bore, I'll load another and shoot it again. Done did just that and missed again!!! The guy that I was sharing the pit with said you just HIGH... right on left and right but high.... I could not really believe it but - I took his word for it. Then I thought the gun is sighted in for a Nosler .451/260 grain Partition maybe this 250 Lehigh flys a bit better than the BC indicates... So turned the scope down 6 clicks and went to shoot another bird... same hold - same load... This time the guy was watching through his binoc's - he declared it a dead on hit... From there the boring starts.... finished off all the rest of the birds - 1 shot 1 bird.... then I started shooting the pieces. It was a great morming - Just wish the sabotless bullets had made it here.
Once again I hereby declare the Omega one of the best guns that TC ever made, especially the early models like the one that I have. And yes! i like it even better than what ever the Encore line of rifles has developed into... BUT -> again remember I am not a break-open rifle fan.
Teamed with the Lehigh - the morning was really uneventful - but, it was fun....
Elk season - 1 mouth away - getting here in a hurry....
