3 shots or 5 shots. Today I went to the range with my cool rod to zero my Savage for a trip to Kansas. My first three were just a hair over MOA so I decided I would follow Richard's advise and shoot a five shot group. Shot four opened up to 1.25 and I threw the last shot with a 1.75 final group. Richard you ruined it. LOL.
Thanks for the cool rod Rossman it really came in handy.

Just hard to get away with the merits of using a "cool rod" during longer warm range sessions Richard

trooper,
I have long looked for an excuse to why excellent three shot groups open up on the fourth or fifth, shot my latest one is one the fifth shot when trying for a one holer, you TRY too hard. and since I'm a perfect marksman it can't be I just pulled the shot [ extra large smile]

Trooper...........you might try what dave d did. Fire three or four or five (3) shot groups and see what you get? Measure and average them. This will give you a good idea what your rifle is capable of doing on a daily basis and not just a one time lucky group. Then...........go ahead and fire a ten shot group and see how the average of the five three shot groups compare? Richard

Richard,
I have about 150 shots through it now and most have been three shot groups for load testing. If they don't print inside a three inch group I change something up. I have found that my gun tends to like about 2000-2100 fps with 300 gr bullets. Right now Remingtons are shooting the best in my rifle and I'm OK with that because they are cheap :-). I can shoot the Barnes within a two inch three shot group but they are very hard to load down my barrel. I do need to do more testing but I'm happy with what I have for my next hunt. Thanks to everyone who post on this site it is a wealth of information.

We'll have to give richard the 40 lashes. He has talked me into just 2 more shots too. ;D bigmoose, think you are right we get a good group going and try to hard and blow it ourselves,if the rifle wasn't capable the first 3 wouldn't have been there. I know for sure it has happened to me before.I would say most of the time it is the follow through, just to big of a hurry to see if that bullet went where it was susposed to.
