On the load links Rifleman shot a 300gr barnes original with 37gr of vv110. The bullet chronographed at 1990fps. In his note at the bottom he stated that this was too slow a speed for this bullet. Is this because it will not expand well at this speed? Can someone explain how fast this bullet must be pushed? I ask this because I get good accuracy with this combination with a remington 300gr HP. I have yet to try it with the barnes.

2250-2400 is a good speed for that bullet if you can take the recoil ( really isn't that bad tho)

If I push the Remington that fast the accuracy suffers. You say 2250-2400 fps. Wondering why that speed is the magic fps. I have good accuracy with 37-39gr of vv110. That gets me close to 2100 fps with good accuracy. 2250-2400 Is this the speed that seems to get the most accuracy out of the Barnes?

I guess my point is this. If i get a moa group out of the Barnes original at 2050fps out of my .50 cal is that a go to load or not. And if not why not.

I suppose it depends on how far you expect to shoot. If you get good accuracy with the Rem HP at that speed, why not hunt with it? The Barnes is generally considered to be a tougher bullet, and may very well need more speed for reliable expansion. You may want to consider a slower burning powder with heavier bullets. Perhaps H-4198 or RE-7. I was unable to use more than 45 gr of N-110 in one of my 50s without stressing sabots, but I was able to get close to 2500 fps with a duplex of 10/58 N-110/H-4198.

if the bullet is on the mark why do you really need the expansion? i would definetly go w/b.o. as long as it is accurate at your intended ranges/jmho

boarhog,
How much recoil is the 10/58 N-110/H-4198 load?

I have shot that duplex load and it is not for the weak hearted, I have gone to shooting the BO with 58-60 gr on N120

Trev33, The 10/58 N-110/H-4198 duplex under a 300 gr bullet thumps pretty good. Seems about like a 3" 12 ga mag load. Not as bad as my single shot 10 ga. with a 3.5" 2 1/4 oz mag load. I shot a deer last season with that load, and never felt a thing! Boarhog

I think I'll stick with my normal load of 60gr. of N120. That's not too bad on the shoulder.

Took my ML out today and shot a 1 inch 3 shot 1.75in 5 shot group with 38gr of vv110 and a remington 300gr 45/70 bullet. My go to load this season

I don't think you will be disappointed. That Remington bullet should expand well and penetrate deeply at that velocity.

What speed do you get with a straight 60 gr load of N-120 and a 300 gr BO? BH

I am thinking about switching to the Barnes Original and the N120 as well. I am curious as to the fps. I currently shoot 34grains of alliant 2400 and the 250Hornady SST.

I have turned the BO almost inside out shooting into dirt at 2500fps, and have had several core-jacket seperations, but it is still one of the best deer bullets we have, IMO. You almost never hear of one being recovered from a deer, so any speed will do you. Jay

A BO leaving the barrel at 2400fps will be going 2170fps at 100, 1950fps at 200, and 1750 at 300yds. I've shot three deer with that combo, one at 125yds, one at 265yds and one at 308yds. All three went through both shoulders without stopping and all three were DRT. Also I've shot a couple more with the .458 Remington HP, one at 208 and another at 190 going between 2250-2300 at the muzzle. Both those deer went down just as quick or even quicker than the BO. One was a pass thru and one wasn't. Any 300 gn bullet going at those speeds with definately kill a deer. I think we have a tendency to over analyze a bullet sometimes. At least I do. I'm shooting the one that is more accurate and less expensive. If my .45 pac-nor puts them down half as good as my .50 does I'll be happy....we'll see. Zen
