It would probably require an aluminum washer under the bullet to keep sabots from blowing since it is a boattail design unless you can find a boattail sabot that works with .458 bullets.

The old "X" bullets were kinda iffy, some guns loved them some didn't. The Barnes Originals shoot great but cost is high. I recommended the Hawk bullets but they didn't shoot well for a friend out of his SOCOM. The best cheap fodder are the Remington 300gr JHPs, the 300gr Hornady and the Speers which shoot better then the TSXs, at least for my friend. They are pretty much proven in the Savage also. He could get less then an inch out of the Hornadys and the Barnes TSXs would come in like 1.5 so he kinda soured on the Barnes. IIRC his best load was with the 405gr Remington SPs. He was going to try some of the Hornady FTXs but haven't heard from him.

Harvester has an Orange Crush Rib in development that may work for .457 boat tails. They sent a few for me to try with .452 bullets, and all were blown sabots. I plan to try them again when I get a chance.

The .458 FTX (325gr) is a good option. I've got some "after" pics from a bullet traveling the full length of deer and put three animals down with them last year.
