Finally got an extended time on the range with my finished Savage centerfire-to-smokeless conversion so I thought I'd throw the target up.
Apparently completely disassembling the gun and also swapping plugs can change the POA, because I was so far off the paper I went through half my loads and had to finally come into 20 yds just to get it on the paper. I only had 3 shots left by the time I hit the paper at 100 yds, so I shot the group and did not get to 300 yards today.
The load is a 5744/H322 duplex (would have to check my notes to figure which one I decided on when I loaded these tubes) under a 200SW with Harvestor blue sabot and one wonder wad in a .45cal Pac-Nor 1:22 twist. It produces 2770 fps.
I really, REALLY like this Rifle Basix trigger. I can have no complaints about this level of performance, nor is there any reason to try any more loads unless I get ahold of some N110 and N130 to gain a couple hundred fps.
I was shooting with my new cooling rod. It was in the mid 80s. I don't know how long I took between shots, but just long enough to put the cooling rod in, swap guns for my 300WinMag, shoot a couple shots with that, pull the cooling rod and reload. Even with no cooler the gun stayed cool and I recovered sabots, they showed absolutely no signs of being anywhere close to failure. I've seen sabots come out worse with Triple Seven.
I can't wait to get out again and go to 300 yards, though the end of my shooting day has me pretty sour right now. I own 15 acres out in farm country, there is nothing for a full mile behind my range. There are houses 100 yds behind my bench position, I have good relationships with those neighbors and even today one of them told me they did not even know I was shooting until they stepped outside. Yet some lady showed up from over a mile away, berating my wife and saying I was keeping her awake (she works nights). I'm trying to figure out how a rifle from over a mile can even be heard inside a house. After the way she acted I feel like driving down there and telling her she can either get earplugs or if she feels the need to try and dictate to people what they want to do on their own property she can move back to a subdivision where she belongs. Nothing sours a rural neighborhood like that type of city person moving in and trying to make it like the city they supposedly wanted to get away from.
Thanks again to everyone here who helped me piece together this gun and the rest of my smokeless equipment and knowledge (daved, Richard, Al, rossman, etc).
