Would love to see some carry Muzzle loaders some have custom made. How short (what is the optimum burn length for .50 cal, 15 inches) and thin the barrels? Do not want top speed, recoil will limit what my old shoulder can take? Have a Savage I just love to shoot but I want a field rifle for carry.

I have a ss savage that I had cut to 21" barrel. It can't be that much lighter but it feels like 8 ounces. It points a lot better for me, I shoot it better off hand. The little bit of weight off the end of the barrel made a lot of difference in my mind. I will have to say that it shot as good at 300 yds. with 24" barrel as it does now at 200. And I can not seam to fix that. At 100 it shoots as good as my 24" barreled savage. So if you want a shorter gun to carry you will suffer at long range.

I have a NULA with 24 inch barrel and 2.5X8 Leupold scope that weighs 6 lbs. 10 oz. It will kick you but not bad with Savage book loads. It is plain black matt stock, and matt Douglas barrel. Nothing to wow you until you pick it up. My buddy Mike thought it was a traditions when he first saw it.

Rick My experience in cutting 3" off my Savage was the same as hunter's. My 2" groups at 200yds before I cut it, went to 5" after. I modified mine in several areas to take off weight. The weight reduction was nice but the loss of accuracy at 200yds killed my confidence in my Savage. I pulled the shorty barrel off and replaced it with a pac-nor. If you're shooting at 100yds cutting off your barrel might work for you. Good luck, Zen Here's what I did..... dougsmessageboards.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=smokeless&action=display&thread=107

Hunter, 24" looks like the shortest a 50 cal can be cut down? Dans, does the barrel look thin in places?
Panhandle, thanks for the link. How does the pac-nor look on the old stock? 200 yards 5" wow

Something built on an Encore or Handi-Rifle can be very lightweight. My Handi conversion is easy to carry, but definitely not a tack driver. Normal ML distances are fine but I have never taken it much past 100 yards. Too bad the bore is larger at the muzzle than it is at the breech edge.

spoon, the muzzle on the NULA is about .740 to .750 everthing is custom built and the stock is kevlar, the action is lightened and every scrape of excess metal is removed. Look on the New Ultralight Arms website and /or call Melvin Forbes. He will be glad to talk to you.

It shoots better than I can. Zen

Zen, what a nice job on the stock. Man you could shoot small game and turkey with that beauty in the head @100 yards plus! What weight is she down to now? Edge, Handi-Rifle, is that a 45/70 mod?
Dans, wow the tube is only 1/8'' thick side wall at the muzzle. Pressure is way down at that point I am guessing? Have a old lathe I am planing turning a barrel, would have to take off very fine cuts to get it that thin, my fear is twisting or bending something out of line and being able to shoot around corners.
