Hey guys. Got this new starter from a old timer that custom made it for me. It has a short start and a longer start on it. He even custom inletted a buffalo nickle in it for me. Love this thing but have one problem. The pushers have terrible bad chatter marks. I'm wanting to smooth it out and trying to think of a way to get it to be the perfect BO starter. Any suggestions other than putting some 220 grit on a BO and sanding it out? Thanks. Ed Here it is... The chatter marks.... The buffalo nickel.... PS I know the pics are terrible but my charger for my Canon died so have to use the phone to take pics till I get a replacement.

Get a small ball grinding stone for a dremal. Then just sit down and as you read on Savage Muzzleloading Message Board. Just twist it back and forth and smooth it out.

I don't think you'll get very far with the lead tip of a Barnes Original. Cuda's suggestion of a small grinding tool, like you use in a Dremel Tool, should work well. You can get them in tree shapes as well as ball.

Do you reload centerfire ammo? If so, you probably have a chamfer/deburring tool like the RCBS model. Use the chamfering end of the tool and spin it by hand in the short starter jag and it will smooth it up real nice. Then take some fine grit sandpaper wrapped around the end of a bullet and polish it up.

A countersink like you would use to recess the head of a tapered head screw would work fine. Even if it was made for wood. The brass is soft and it will cut it. Come to think of it.........why not just drill and tap it 10/32 and you can screw in a "spin" jag or even a regular jag??? Richard

A lot of good ideas coming in and I will have to try one soon. I have about 3/4 of the stuff to start reloading but have not yet picked up a chamfer tool but that's on the short list. I would put a jag on the end but don't think I can get it centered very well with a cordless drill so I think for right now that option is out unless I can find someone with a drill press. I would love to put a spinjag on the long end and just a good regular jag on the short end. I will know how tough the brass is when I get working on it. I'll let you know how it all comes out. Ed

I did like Richard suggested. I put TC 10/32 SST adapters on both sides of my short starter and my factory ram rod. They don't spin but the work fine for pointed bullets or for XTPs and Rem 300s.
