Any one here did a ruger rifle conversion to smokeless? I have a 22-250 that I am thinking of converting to 45 cal. smokeless. Lou

:)Lou there has been a few. Me,Dw , and Kerry did a trio awhile back All .45's. Mine was a 14 twist 24" and I believe Dave and kerry's where 20 twists. I no longer have mine but if shot great. Dave and kerry still have there's. Smi did the conversions and we used shilen blanks.

One slight correction I was lucky enough to now have daved rug#1. It has it's own problems but as far as I'm concerned is a sweet piece Jon

I would also like to hear more about the ruger .45s. I intend to do a .45 in the future, and most likely will put a pac nor on my savage ML II, but I am still considering a Rem or Ruger conversion.

Thanks everyone. Jon what were the problems you had?. If it looks like every other conversion I've seen, I imagine one of the problems is he spends to much time sitting around staring at it. They are things of beauty, for sure

ourway77. No problem with the gun at all it just not as easy to prime and unprime, harder to get to under a scope. It shoots great. I've got a thing for the #1. Jon

No expert here but I will give some thoughts on the #1. A #1 offers a more compact gun, I probably could have went with a 28" barrel and still been pretty close to a stock MLII in length. I have always liked the eye appeal of the #1 over a bolt gun also. I like the plug better than the Savage but I think a better mousetrap would be a set up like Edge and Dave D designed for the Remington where the extractor is still intact and a person could use primed cases. My #1 is kind of a pain to prime and someone with bigger fingers may have trouble getting the primer in the plug since the scope is in the way and it is a tight recessed area. I don't like the fact you have to carry a tool for primer extraction either. Triggers on all the Rugers I have had leave something to be desired. Mine is not bad, but it is not great by any means. Moyer makes an aftermarket I believe but not sure how good it is, probably others but I have never researched them. I read somewhere the #1 can be finicky about bench technique because the forearm hanger with too much downward pressure can cause the stock to come in contact with the barrel. Someone makes a forearm hanger tensioner where you can tweak the load a little, I just experimented with shims. Prices on used #1's at Cabelas locally is awfully high, if you already have the gun that would help. Getting the work done is another problem, 1 Shot 1 Kill may be an option as he has converted some or SMI, unless you spring for a Bad Bull. That said, I love mine. Dave D has went through several conversions, he would be a prime source for info on the advantages and disadvantages of different models. Some oics:

That is the reason I like the lead sled I can move the front rest for my #1. Would never think about selling or trading unless dire times keep coming up. Jon

here is my ruger no. 1 i have been shooting it since 2006 it is my go to gun for hunting in any state. it was done by SMI with a douglas barrel 28" .45 cal. 1:28 twist load 73 grains h322 and 200 gr. sst w/blue sabot also t/c makes a neet little primer holder that makes putting a primer in it a snap. its black plastic and about 4" long and holds a primer on each end.

What breech plug do you use for the #1 and does Pac-Nor make a barrel for it? Any specifics would be extremely helpful. I have a#1 in .220 Swift that I am contemplating converting to ml.
Thanx,
JohnP

SMI did mine and they have their own plug design, much shorter than the Savage. We ordered blanks from Shilen then SMI turned them down to the contour we wanted. See no reason you could not buy a Pac Nor blank and have it sent to SMI but it will most likely raise the cost since they use Douglas barrels and I assume the get bulk rates from Douglas for their blanks. I know the Balls have converted #1's but not sure if it was for private use or they offer them to the public so they may be an option also.

I agree with Bigmoose! I just love the look of those Ruger #1s. I don't know why I've never acquired one??? My Step Son has one in 338 Win Mag, that I covet! Boarhog
