Just wondering how you guys are cleaning, from the muzzle or the breach? If from the breach do you know where to buy a bore guide? If from the muzzle do you use a guide? This would be for the 50cal Thanks gunny

I clean only from the breech just like cleaning a centerfire. I bought a bore guide from Possum Hollow, the same place that Larry provided the link to. Works perfect provided you have the right length cleaning rod.

Gunny........I am a benchrest shooter and have bore guides for all my bench guns. I started out making a bore guide but since have gone to a muzzle guide.........such as used on autoloaders. I machined it from aluminum and use it for both starting my bullet/sabots and for cleaning. It is much easier for me to use it with my shorter rods. I use the same rod for loading as for cleaning. The interior dimension is the same as my land to land measurement.......so it does not cause a "crown" problem. Richard

No gunny..........it fits "over" the muzzle and extends forward about an inch. It basically makes it into a QLR (correct me if I am wrong, but I was not into ML's when that term came out.....Quick Load Recess? ?). Knight and Savage for a while would recess the muzzle so you could insert your bullet/sabot about 3/4" and it would line up perfectly with the bore. My gizmo just fits over the muzzle and extends an inch forward. It basically does the same thing---------------only removable...............That is unless you forget to remove it ;D . I shot mine all the way down to the 100 yard berm. The bullet/sabot cleared it (caused no damage) but the gas pressure launched it bouncing down the snow/ice covered range and it came to rest at my target "completely unscathed!" Richard

If I'm being honest, I've never used a bore guide because I wasn't convinced they were necessary. And on top of that, I've always cleaned my muzzleloaders from the muzzle to the breach. Am I doing something that wrong?

Kirgby..............What you don't want to do is constantly rub your cleaning rod against the crown. Without some sort of a guide to prevent this, you will eventually FUBAR the crown. Cleaning from the rear is probably the best way but you need a relatively long rod so your hand is not hitting on the stock. For the little cleaning I do, the muzzle guide works fine and it keeps the rod from hitting the crown. Richard
