I saw a mention here where it was stated that you could remove the new hex head style breech plug without removing the rear stock screw? Please enlighten on how this is possible.
I tried to install/remove the new style breechplug tonight by using a 3/8" socket and craftman ratchet and was unable to due to the head of the rathet not allowing allowing straight access to the breechplug. What normal garage tools will allow removal without removing stock screw?

Robertb
I believe this is done with ¼” drive 3/8” socket, swivel, extension and ratchet. Approach is from the open breech area. Loosen BP and let it slide into open breech area where it can be removed.
Hope this is what you are looking for.

It doesn't seem like a big deal to me, to remove the bolt. I have to do so anyway, if I'm going to clean the rifle. I use a stubby 3/8 drive ratchet, with a 3/8-1/4 adapter and a 6' extension. It is a lot less trouble with the thumb removable, rear action screw, that Richard made when he third pillared and bedded my Duramax stock.

I also tried using a 3/8" swivel and it too was too big. It sounds like a 1/4" swivel for a 3/8" socket may work.
On a separate note, can I get buy with using a thumb screw with a factory laminated stock (i.e. no third pillar)? If so, where can I get the thumb removable screw?
Thanks guys for all the help....I'm upgrading from a Knight MK-85 and I'm learning the ins and outs of the Savage.

robertb,
The thumb screw boarhog is taking about is made by Richard for the third pillar, and allows the bolt to be taken out without disturbing the action because it is held down by the other two pillar screws.
Hope this helps,

Robert..........Hee is a picture of the thumb screw on my custom stock. You will notice just in front of it is another screw: This is what is commonly referred to as the "third pillar". So, you have three screws: The most forward one is there from Savage. Then you have the third pillar/screw installed by myself or whoever, then the replacement "thumb" screw which I put in. With this set up, the original Savage screw and the third pillar screw are the two that hold your action in the stock. The thumb screw is simply put in "thumb" tight and it only acts as the "bolt stop". Savage used this as not only the bolt stop but also to secure the action. So now, if you want to easily remove the bolt with out any tools? Just unscrew the thumb screw and slide your bolt out? Simple. Now just use the tool supplied by Savage to remove your breech plug. Just get a torque driver. Have a set # for installation and when need be take the screw out, remove BP, clean and service etc... when finished put the BP and screw back in and torque to same # as always. The simple way. NO special smithing and the torque driver should be used when torquing down most any gun anyway. That's my method and my Savage is very consistent. Only improvement from factory is bedding and having one of Macks folding loading rods on the sling and not leaving a rod in the gun. My $.02 10 ga

you can use a 1/4 inch drive 3/8 socket with a 1/4 inch swivel to the socket.
