Scuttlebutt is there are changes coming to the Savage.A new breech plug design. The thumbhole stock is supposedly only to fit the changed 2010 model. Anyone have info to back this up ? Im still waiting for mine. Thanks Don

The new breech plug will be the 3/8" hex head design, which is available now. Savage will be changing the action slightly, in that the action screw holes will be 4.400" (like the current centerfeed centerfire rifles), instead of the 4.25" hole spacing (like on the old staggerfeed centerfire rifles).

So, the new breech plug will work in the older 10MLII's and eliminate the need for the special removal tool? Do those that have tried it prefer it over the old design?

With the different action screw placement ,does that mean you won,t have to loosen the screw to get the bolt out I can only hope. Don

You will still have to loosen the rear action screw to remove the bolt. The difference in the new action screw spacing means that stocks will not interchange with the older 10ML's and 10ML-II's.
The new hex head breach plug will fit in any 10ML-II. It will make the rare stuck breech plug a thing of the past. If I am not mistaken I think with a 1/4" rachet driver and a 3/8" short well socket, with a 2" extension or a 3/8" deep well socket, I don't think you need to remove the bolt at all, to remove the breech plug.

If you have your action PROPERLY bedded..............even though you don't have the "third pillar". In my mind, it is just Sooooooooo much easier to loosen that screw and remove the bolt. Then go in from the rear with your Savage tool to remove the plug. Just the thought of going in from the loading port with a socket wrench and fiddling with the short strokes you need to make seems like such a pain. I have never had a problem using the Savage tool and have no intention of getting a plug with the hex head. Not to say that if I needed a new one, that I would not buy it? But I would still want to access it from the rear and not on an angle thru the port. With the "thumb screw", it is so simple, it is a no brainer! Richard

The hex head design does not change the way you remove the breech plug. The breech plug was reworked to lesson the likely hood of a broken breech plug tool on the old style breech plugs.Which was fairly common if you stuck one.

I don't have one of those "Through the side" BP tools. I still remove the bolt and use a 3/8 socket and extension, on a stubby 1/4" drive ratchet.
Sort of on this subject, I missed a chance to buy a 1 lb jug of the Devcon Plastic Steel Putty @ $25.00, to use for bedding jobs. Does anyone know a good source? Robert

MSC I think had it on sale if that was the same place. I usually get it from MSC or WW Grainger.

The hex head style BP is available from Savage now. Joe DeGrande sent one with a replacement barrel, several months back.
