I posted this today on www.deshooters.com/forum/index.php and thought I should post it here also. I recently bought a 45 cal. rifle barrel from Natchez, had a gunsmith in Pa. cut and crown it and bought 2 encore camo laminated forends from ea brown. A little Dremel work and now I have 2 muzzleloader handguns. The top one is the 45 cal. and the bottom one is 50 Cal. I plan to use them in Maryland this year during ML and gun season. I use 80 gr. of Blackhorn 209 www.blackhorn209.com/ in both with 260 gr. Scorpion PT gold from Harvester in the 50 cal. I presently shoot 200 gr. Hornady SST with Harvester Sabot in 45 cal. I'm expecting a shipment of Dead center bullets from Precision Rifle bullets in 240 gr. and 260 gr. for the 45 cal. I will experiment with those and if good I'll use them. I had a 45 cal. rifle at one time and they shot good. www.prbullet.com/Besides being fun to shoot they both are pretty accurate out to 100 yards(longest distance to date)

Did you contact BATF on the legality of converting a centerfire action to a ML pistol? To convert a centerfire rifle to pistol is a big no-no but I've been debating the idea with a break-action shotgun action I have. I have the barrel to do it and everything, but have been nervous on the BATF angle and not gotten around to asking them directly.

Both frames were purchased as handguns. I have added 5 or 6 different barrels since buying them. I have 2-44mags, a 223, 2-357 maximums and the muzzleloader barrels. I was very careful not to get a rifle frame and I have never put a rifle barrel on my frames. Never bought a rifle barrel and don't intend to.
I have seen on other sites that they have already clarified that it is a no no. I have been told in Pa. they can do the paperwork to register a frame as both, making it legal. Here in Delaware dealers say there is no law requiring anyone to prove what a frame is after it's bought, however I will not cross that line.
Handgun frames only for me!!!!!!!

Sorry I should have quoted, I was referring to Ramrod's Rem700 conversion he mentioned. In general I know converting receivers to a pistol is highly illegal, but I have never heard it clarified that converting to a ML pistol, which is technically not a firearm by BATF rules, is illegal. It may be but I've never had this confirmed to my satisfaction.

With the encore (in Maryland ) it was a gray area when i first bought mine. You can't even buy encore handguns without extra paperwork and shooting at an approved range by a certified person to get a spent shell case.
But I live in Delaware, so buying was no problem. My concern at the time was if I had to discharge it every time I got in my car(to go home at night, move to another area to hunt, go eat or whatever) or could I just take the primer out like a regular ml.
I wrote to Md DNR and was told it was considered a ML as long as it had a ml barrel and I could just remove the primer just like a rifle. I keep a copy of that email from the state with my license.
I actually can't use either ml handgun to hunt in my home state of Delaware. You can only use a ml pistol as a coup de gra?? as a final killing shot on a wounded animal. It's good you asked the question the way you did, there are still a lot of people who don't understand about BATF rules and what you can and cannot do.
As I have found out, each state has a little different twist to the laws.
thanks, for clarifying your question.

Yeah and you have those state rules (some DNR for game and some state on firearms in general) as well as the Feds ie BATF. And you have to please them all. Contenders/Encores were a sore spot with BATF when they came out, I read T/C spent some time in court getting it all ironed out before they were done. So when I hear of a rifle action being converted to pistol I get curious because I still haven't gotten an answer to the twist of converting to a ML pistol. One of these days I'll email them and find out.
