.45 cal.
I was going to hold off from pictures but I shot a (actually a couple) new powder combination today after talking with Edge. The results, while not spectacular, were good enough that I will try it/them again next week to see if it repeats.
First off, there are NO speed readings. For whatever reason, my chronograph would not pick up the bullet speeds? I forgot my rechargeable 9V batteries and had to use one of Bill's Energizers. Actually we tried two! My Pact screen would light up as usual, but would just not read the shot. This is unusual for my set up. (yes, it was definitely lined up properly and re-lined and raised and lowered and shaded and sky screened) For me, shooting without my chronograph is akin to "taking a bath without water " It leaves questions in my mind as to why a shot does or does not go into a group........or goes high...or low or wherever?
Targets were shot at both 100 and 200 yards (hence I did not see/examine Herman's target as I left the range before him)
Edge had asked my about duplexing with N-110 and Re-7, Norma 200 and IMR-4198. I had tried 110 and H-4198 but the results were not great? Maybe if I played with it more? I do not have any Norma powders on my shelf. but Re-7? I have. In the past I only shot it as a single with the .45 and again, other powders shot better (for me anyway). So I loaded up ten shots worth of N-110 (10 gr.) and Re-7 (60 gr.) to give it a try. As you can see, it did fairly well at 100 yards using the .40 cal. 200 gr. XTP which I reformed the point (greatly decreased the size of the hollow point meplat). I then proceeded to the 200 yard target where it also did very well. If I had to guess, by the crack and recoil, it felt like a 2800 + fps load!
A 100, the 250 XTP sabot less was junk. Only fired two shots.
The 230 XTP which has been shooting well, did so again at 100. I then shot it at 200 and it was just.........ok?
At 200, the 200 gr. SST with a 15/56..110/322 duplex was only fair.
The same duplex with the 200 FTX sabot less was again, only fair to poor at 200
But then................the 195 Barnes MZ with a 5/66...N-110/N-120 duplex at 200 clustered three shots in 1.163 which I felt was definitely respectable. OK, why not two more? Those Barnes are expensive! I know they can shoot so why waste them? So, using the same duplex, I switched to the 200 gr. SST (more affordable ;D) and shot a five shot group. Nothing spectacular but three in a row did group 2.263" Based on my POI, I would put this load in the 2900 fps range.
So, the Re-7duplex and 5/66 .. 110/N-120 will get more attention next week.
