XTP mags were made with thicker jackets for the .454 Casull. Due to the high pressure with full powerhouse loads the .454 generates, some .45 bullets would shed their jackets going from the cylinder into the barrel, so Hornady and Speer made a thicker jacketed bullet. Since the .460 SW came out I think they also recommend using the mag bullet.
Regular XTP's have two grooves. The first groove is to crimp for .45 Long Colt and the second groove is for the .454.
I shot deer with both and both worked OK. Mags are suited more for hunting brown bear, elk, moose or buffalo. Mike

I am sure 10's of thousands of big game animals [over a 1200 pounds] have been taken with jacketed bullets, With the exception of the Nosler Partition that Smoke uses, I would only use an all cooper bullet, Two reasons, one if you hit a large bone, the bullet will stay together and make a clean kill, two, if its a once a year hunt, that costs as much as on compact car, you want every edge possible. I have had two bonded bullet, blow apart on Moose, that is why I put all bullet I use thru my penetration test. I know many folks are fans of the Barnes Original bullet, a great deer round, However for large game? in my test the 300gr O not only broke apart, but weighted 146.8 after the test, in the same test the Barnes X 300gr. bullet, not only penetrated much deeper, but still weighted 300grs a perfect mushroom, this is only my opinion, and I may be the only one to take it seriously. But for whats it worth here it is. Marty

One last thought, if you are after Big Game, there is no such thing as being over gunned, I you can shot your rifle well, take it, you don't need a 375 to hunt hunt big game but if you practice and shoot it well, its a great choice. The loads I'm shooting out of my 50, exceed the power of the 375.

I traded in a 454 raging bull to offset the cost of the 10 II stainlessthumb hole, which is on order ;D I checked some prices on the Barnes originals 300 .458 Spire points 44.00 per 50 but the shipping is a rip off,16.00 If anyone knows where to purchase reasonably i would greatly appreciate a lead. Going to Manitoba for 2 weeks Whitetail hunt in 2011, looking forward to trippin the latch on a Manitoba giant ;D
