Today was sunny, hot (83 in the shade) and humid at the range in the company of my two good friends Herman and Bill.
Let me say this: I started off with a senior moment . I set my targets at 100 and 200 yards. I am now using 1 1/4" red pasters on my 200/300 yard target board. 3/4" on my 100 yard board. Get my rifle set up in the sled and my chronograph set up and am ready to shoot. Just so happens the gun is lined up on the 200 yard target (which I did not realize ) With the larger pasters and my 20X scope, I just thought it was 100 yards. NOT! It took about 12 shots before I realized the problem? On my first group I expected the bullet to be just about on the dot since the load was in the 2900 fps range (70 - N-120) Instead, it was 18" low???I proceeded to fire three more which subsequently produced a 4 shot 4.5 group (at 200) I was really scratching my head
The next load was an 18/56..N-110/H-322 duplex with 200 gr. XTP. I fired three very low shots that also looked large for 100 yards (actually a 3.2" group at 200 yards). Still scratching my head, checking the tightness of the rings and mounts; even clicking up and down with the turrets and could not see anything wrong? So, I fired up a 200 gr. FTX .45 cal. sabot less load with a proven duplex of 15/55...5744/H-322 and also got a big 100 yard group (4.5" at 200). I then switched to the 230 gr. XTP with the same charge: this had given me a 1" five shot 100 yard group last week! The first two shots again low (now mind you I am going lower and lower on my stadia lines and still shooting low) and I was about to give up! I don't recall what happened but some thing got my attention and I realized I was shooting my 200 yard target
The real 100 yard targets:
OK, 230 gr. XTP sabot less with 15/55 ..5744/H-322....Avg. vel=2544, ES = 45 fps and five shot group = 1.7"
Same bullet, same 15/55..........but N-110/H-322........Avg. vel=2662, ES = 37 fps and the five shot group 1.8"
(group wise very similar but velocity up over 120 fps!)
250 SST ...15/55..........N-110/H-322 Avg. vel= 2612 fps, ES= 29 fps and five shot group = 1.8"
Once I got my head screwed on straight, the loads performed well
Since a lot of what I am shooting has already been listed in the "loads" section, I have decided cut back some on the pictures/load sheets unless some spectacular load developes. At least until the 26" .45 barrel arrives.
I am also in the process of putting together a post on the 600 yard benchrest game which will include equipment, targets, loads, loading procedures, some new record holders with their groups. I discussed it with Edge and will put it on the Back Porch until its relegated to the Modern Rifle group. Hopefully it will spark some interest with people interested in long range shooting, whether competition or hunting.
