I was able to get out with my .50 cal for a quick range trip yesterday afternoon.
Load was the Hornady 4500 300 grain bullet with the double cannelure. Duplex inspired by Richard and Herman N110/N120.
My setup:
- 10 ML II, Laminated Stock, Stainless Barrel
- Got a new crown done, and a third pillar and bedding job by
richard(I can't say enough good things about his work.)
- RB recessed plug with a lehigh vent.
- Spin jag loader, with solid aluminum ram rod and a nylon ram rod guide. I also use a spin jag bullet starter.
- Primer FED 209A
- Wait time between shots was 5 minutes and used my barrel cooler
Used an ET bullet knurler.
Thanks to northny for solving my vertical string problem, which was me with an inconsistent cheek weld.
Thanks to rangeball for sharing smooth harvester sabots to try.
Targets were shot in the order you see them top to bottom at 100 yards, and the temp started at 65 degrees and finished around 60 degrees. The wind was from behind me at around 5 to 10.
Black Crush Rib and smooth black sabots had a heavy knurl on the bullet and the Red crush rib had a light knurl.
My ritual for loading:
Every shot I load the booster powder then tamp the gun on my foot 3 or 4 times to even it out and do the same with the primary powder. Then with the same pressure all the way down the bore I load the bullet. Finally I pack it down with all my weight for a ten count.
Question:
I am trying to figure out with a one grain increase of N120 the primary powder from target 3 to target 4 why did it shoot almost exactly the same except the group was a little more to the right.
When I last shot using 5/54 as my duplex the 5/55 groups where almost 100 fps faster, but nothing when going to 5/56?
