Trying to build a 45cal and I found a Mossberg 695 12ga. What do you think would the receiver be large and strong enough for this? And I think that the barrel would be about the right size. But I do not know what the barrel measures. I do not have it yet so I thought I would check first. I have been looking for a cheap one for a long time.

I would not get overly concerned with "receiver strength" as all your pressures are contained forward of the breech plug inside the barrel! As long as the breech plug holds, you are in good shape! ;D Richard

I would have a real good breech plug made for it. I think the barrel has a lock ring on it like the Savage barrels do. But not sure what the tread is on the barrel.

The major diameter on the Savage is just like the Remingtons: 1.059" but the thread is: 20 tpi where the Remington is 16 tpi. Don't know about the Mossbergs? Richard

How do you plan to prime it? IMO, everything starts from there edge.

Look for a used Savage 340, Rem 788 for used stuff. An old beater should be OK. If a new action look at the Howa actions or Stevens promotional (big box store guns) for actions. A couple of the local smiths are using them in SMLs. I recently saw new Stevens for $330. Then you may even have a switch barrel gun. 10 ga

Not to sure what I should do? The gun will be for my son. He is taller than I am (big boy) I may have to just look for a good used gun. He wanted to do it his way but it might be cheaper to buy used.

IMO, you need to decide on your method of priming before making any other decisions. If you want the Savage ML style of priming, then buy a used ML. Probably the most user friendly way to go...but also probably the most expensive! NOTE: Unless the rifle actually blew up I would personally buy one with a bulged barrel if the price were right If you are ok with using an extractor tool or if you are lucky sometimes by finger, then you can try a break open rifle like a H&R, falling block, etc. If you are willing to use a cartridge type case, then a Remington 700, a Savage long or short action ( I would vote for short ), Stevens, and I am 99% sure the cheapest would be a Marlin XL7. Cartridge priming can be frustrating for some if the headspacing is not perfect. Cheap and light would be a H&R with a quality barrel. Full power loads will rattle your teeth, but adding weight is an option and dropping weight is not always so easy This probably won't be the most accurate long rage rifle, but for under 200 yards it should be fine. edge.
