Abe moved from kentucky into the Ozarks with a wife and two kids plus a long legged spotted hound he called Bugle. He fit in well in most areas but soon found himself unwanted at the weekly foxhunts. Unable to figure this out he ask a neighbor to please give him a reason. He was told that people liked his company fine but they couldn't abide with his dog. Inquiring why they disliked Bugle he was told that she ruined every fox race because she ran off and left the other hounds so far behind that they ended up cold trailing. Learning this, he told his neighbor that he would tie his dog up if that would make him welcome. It would, he was told. When Saturday night came the man from Kentucky chained his dog to the barn door and joined the hunt.
The dogs struck and made two circles before going over a hill out of hearing.
The jug was passed around and Abe was fitting right in with the crowd. But then the dogs voices was heard and everyone stood up. Among the voices was that of Ole Bugle and Abe was in big trouble. But soon Big John said: "This is a fine race our dogs are staying in there with Old Bugle tonight." The hound voices came closer and closer and the voices appeared all together. Just then a big Red Fox pass near the fire at full speed with the hounds not far behind. Everyone was happy until the dogs came by. Old Bugle was in the lead draging the barn door and three hounds was riding it like a sled. It is told that Abe sent Bugle back to Kentucky so he would mesh better with the Ozark boys. Pass the jug John......
