Hi, Sorry if this has been asked already. But I am curious if anyone has tried Hornady's 225 grain FTX in a Savage .50 ? This is the bullet I am talking about: www.hornady.com/store/45-Cal-.452-225-gr-FTX/I understand that Savage says use 250 grain or 300 grain bullets, but I am curious if anyone has tried with this lighter bullet. Thanks, Dennis

Dennisr, I have shot them in one of my 50s and also sabotless in a 45. They group well, and are way less expensive than the 250 gr XTP. I set them up as a custom bullet in my Sierra ballistics program, and was a bit surprised that they have almost the same BC as the 250 XTP. I will order more when I see them available somewhere. I know that Herman and Richard have shot them, and I believe there are several other board members that have also. Boarhog

Thanks Boarhog.
How much powder did you use? Do you have to adjust down the powder charge because of the reduced bullet weight?

Dennis, I have shot them with the short black mmp sabot with 58-62 gr. of N120 out of my Savage. The group was less than an inch at 100 yards,a cloverleaf all touching; this has proven to be the most accuatre bullet I have shot out of my gun and I have shot them all. I did do a slight knurl on them also. Loads 2 hands hard in my gun with the range rod. They come 100 to the box and if you look around on the net you should be able to buy them for around 25.00

Dennisr, In my 45, I have used them sabot less with several duplex loads. The fastest and most accurate, so far, has been 5/65 N-110/N/120, but also got fair accuracy with 12/56 N-110/N-130 In my Thumb hole 50, that has a fairly loose barrel, I have not found a really accurate load yet. About 3" group, and I had to knurl them a little and use the MMP Short Blk sabot. Anything else is much too loose in this barrel. I plan to try them with 60 gr N-120, 44 gr SR-4759, and maybe a couple of N-110/H-4198 duplexes the next chance I have to shoot. Boarhog
