Penetration Test I used 65grs H4198 Bullet loaded easy, used my thumb to start it. Recoil about the same as a 300gr. Barnes X bullet with 70grs H4198 Recovered 220.1grs, Penetration, 3 inches wood, a touch under 4 inches hard packed magazines, call it 7 inches, which is good. With the Barnes X you get 9 inches and a bullet that still weighs 300grs. perfect mushroom With the Barnes 0, which is a fine game bullet, you get 6 inches and a 146.8 remaining. This is why this test means little in hunting, but its fun, which is all the reason I need. Marty

While talking about testing some cast bullets, I have been wondering if a gas check would hold up better to smokeless pressures than plain base cast?

While talking about testing some cast bullets, I have been wondering if a gas check would hold up better to smokeless pressures than plain base cast? IMHO, NOPE, that is why the sabot is there. If you were shooting sabotless and then maybe only if you exceeded 1600 FPS.

Bigmoose,
Try one at my recommended velocity of 1500 to 1700 FPS. 65 gr. of your H4198 should have pushed well past 2100 FPS. Possibly as high as 2400 FPS. as you know your load of H4198 is equal in velocity to the same weight jacketed bullet in a 458 win mag. The bullet and sabot are 347gr +
Try 45 to 50 gr. of H4198. This should give you 1700 to 1900 FPS, or 30 to 33 gr of either XMR5744 or SR4759.

Ken,
Will do, Have lots of powder, bullets and the will to experiment. As for velocity reached, that is out of my reach, as I have said, I can only get these figures from Edge.

I was not talking about using the gas check bullets sabot less. I have read that lead bullets over obturate with smokeless. Specifically, I was thinking that the 260 gr LBT style gas check bullet would be a good killer, and not too expensive to play.
