I was searching the net and came across some Hornady .458 300 grain hollow points. They look similar to an xtp. Has any one tried them? They are around $15 for 50

Thanks Chuck for a link to that post. It even answered another question I was going to ask about Hornady red sabots and .458 bullets

In my stock Savage 50 ML
I am favoring the BCR at this time. I have not tried the Hornady red. I have used hph 12 and hph 24. I tried 3 petal EZ.
I liked the HPH 12 the best. It is very difficult loading. I have a QLA type barrel.
I push them beyond their design velocity. I do not hunt with them. I would hunt Whitetails with them if I had no TMZs. If I were to bear hunt with them, I would slow them down.

Tim, I used that bullet last year in all my shooting. It shot good for me and I took a deer with it. The shot on the deer was quartering away. The bullet took out a piece of the liver, top of the heart, and bottom of lungs. It was about a 75 yard shot, using 40 gr. AA5744 and an orange MMP .458 sabot. Deer traveled about 50 yards, trying to get back to the dry creek bed, but didn't make it! The blood trail was so good a blind man could have followed it.
I really like the bullet, and if you are going to have shots 150 yards or less, I think it's equal with the Barnes Original at those distances, especially on effectiveness on deer-sized game.

Only bullets I have used are XTP, SST, and Barnes expander. Have killed deer with all 3 from 70 yards to 190 yards. Deer that ran the furthest was 45 yards blood everywhere and it was the SST

The Hornady .458 300g HP was a very accurate bullet in my old 50 cal Savage barrel. It liked speeds in the 2200 to 2300 fps range. This bullet paired with 58 or 60g of N120 and the Harvester BCR sabot was a consistent 1.5" 100 yd combo. I would not hesitate to hunt with this bullet if I was keeping shots at 200 yds and less. If you want to shoot farther than that and want to stay with .458 300g bullets then the Barnes Original it hard to beat.

I shoot this bullet at 2150 fps. Killed a doe at 230 yds. Shoots great for me out to 300 yds. with a burris fulfield II. It is all I shoot anymore.Hornady #4500, bcr,and sr4759 is all I need.

I would guess the Horn. 300's are close in ballistics/performance to the Rem. 300's? Has anyone used both on deer--if so are results same?
Thanks----Mark

Why more grains in the winter?

Why more grains in the winter? Drop of velocity due to temp. changes. Not uncommon with certain powders.

As it gets colder the air also gets more dense You can hit a golf ball much farther in the summer than in the winter :(I can't remember exactly but with my 243, every 20 degree drop in temp I think my bullet drops 1 inch in 300yrds. I am sure others hear can tell us more presicely what I am talking about. ;D

Also common to reduce charges in the summer to keep from blowing sabots if one doesn't use some kind of artificial barrel cooling method
