I finally went back to the range with the 45cal. PAC-nor.I had planed on trying some different loads.I stared out with my pet load of 60 gr H-4198 and 200gr SST and a CCIM209 Primer.I started shooting and the first 2 shot went pretty close and then the other went little further away then they should have.I had to shoot 2 more to see what was going on with it.I thought to my self them shot felt good and the velocity was pretty close.I said to my self them should not have went their.I had my other stock with me the thumb-hole laminated wood stock.I said let change the stock and see what happen.I took the stock off and switch them out.I starting shooting a group with that and shot a 5 shot group. I got a black marker were the 5 shot should have hit i shot at another target. I started inspection the stock when i got home.I did find where the tang area was rubbing a little.I will sand that off some more and try that stock again. Note:before i took the stock off i check my scope ring and action screw to make sure everything was tight then decided to change it out.

Marty..........that looks real good! I have also occasionally had some in-accuracy with the first few shots...........It might be that you need to build up a little plastic fouling in the bore? Actually, that is an excellent group! But lets think about it? I made a comment on another thread about someone who said his .45 PN shoots 1" five shot groups at 200 yards In order to do that, your rifle would have to be able to shoot five shot 1/2" groups at 100 yards..........That is literally a one hole group. So when I hear someone make that kind of comment, I have to take it with a "grain of salt!" Particularly someone who almost never posts anything and then out of a blue sky claims something like that. Minute of angle with a ML is feat in itself much less 1/2 MOA at 200 yards. What with the elements acting upon the bullet, a hold that will not be as good as at 100 yards, mirage, the quality of your rest, the recoil? If I did not know any better, I might be fooled! You have got a good load and you will probably, for time to time, shoot under an in for five shots at 100 yards! Richard

Richard Richard,I don't clean my gun between shots all i do is dry swab the bore. :)I also don't clean the breech plug or the barrel the only time.I cleaned my gun is when i got it back from black ice.I had 130 shots through the bore before cleaned it with a brush and the only reason i cleaned it cause sent it to black ice. I should have said how many shot i had on the barrel.I have 35 shot on the barrel since it last cleaning.I got a 150 shot on my breech plug and vent liner.I do check my vent liner when i come back from the range eveytime to see if it has opened up at all.

Shooter That’s some nice stacking on the second target. Also liked the way you sought out what the problem might be with target #1. It’s nice to know where to start looking instead of saying “What the Fudge is happening?” Obviously you’ve done your homework on the learning curve. Ed

That's interesting Marty and good thinking. It will be very interesting so see if you can get your other stock to do that well. I agree with Herman about the 63 gr. but your results are very good at 60. Your velocity is right up there too. Let us know how you make out.

:)Marty that is some real awsome shooting with 9 consistent shots in a row, 2 shooters and 2 different bullets. I would say you and your gun are very much in tune and ready for the upcoming season.again great shooting

Very good Marty, good shooting. I think others should take note of what you did for the rear tang area.I want at least to be able to slide a piece of notebook paper under the tang in all my savages (muzzleloaders and reg rifles)I got this from an expert savage rifle builder years ago on another savage site. If you have a full bedding job like richard does it is not as important as it is with a rifle that has not been bedded. If you have the tang biting down in the stock you have too much pressure on the action.

Richard, While its silly to say on any given day, anyone will shoot a one hole group. My RB special is capable of doing it. 290gr Barnes FB barnes, W/W and 53 grs of H4198.It has done it several time, a better marksman might be able to do it more aften What does it mean.........not much... PS this rifle can hit dime sized items The Barnes are re-sized to 450.5

Thats excellent shooting Marty and you made a good decision in switching stocks early to help find the problem. I know with my Savage the screw torque is critical I went from actually not being able to kept shots in a 6" group to shooting on average a 3/4 in 3 shot group by torquing to 34" pounds. If you get bored and stuck in traffic sometime call me Tony.

Marty...........that is excellent shooting, to say the least! Bigmoose...........If a person was to say "One time, I put five shots into an inch at 200 yards" I might be inclined to believe them. Providing that person had shown on other occasions that he was capable of shooting some nice targets. But, when someone comes out and says: "My gun (PN .45 ML) shoots 5 shot one inch groups at 200 yards?") Then I have to roll up my pants because I know "its getting deep!" That shooter never even posts any targets or results. Even though I shot a 1.564" record (from 2002 to 2007) five shot 1,000 light gun group at 1,000 yards in registered IBS competition, I always preface it by saying "one time!" Yes, that barrel was capable of shooting 4,5 and 6" groups on a regular basis and had on another occasion, put four in 2" with one out to make it a 5" group. But I would never say "my gun shoots 1 1/2" five shot groups!" When it comes to my groups, I always report it as it is. I could easily number the shots on my target to make them look better............giving a bunch of tiny three shot groups. But I can not lie to myself. Like a golfer who "re-locates" a bad hit ball Now tell me...................Every time you shoot at a dime...you hit it? Richard

Richard, We are in 100 persent agreement. I have gotten lucky with some groups, but if I write about a group, its because I had independent witness's. You are a skilled long range shooter, I'm just a gent that likes to shoot, plus I feel, as long as I go into the field, I owe it to the game, to practice. And when the day come's and it will that I can't shoot to the standards I have set for myself, I will give up hunting. and just plink. Hopefully that day is in the furture.
