Does anyone know what the thread is on my Rem. 700 breech plug or what size tap do I need to clean the threads up with.
None of the taps that I have are right. It looks like it may be metric but I have no metric taps that large to guage it with.

1/4 x 28 threads for the nipple, 11/16 x 20 for the plug

nmaineron, Good luck finding your 11/16"-20 tap. Al helped me some months back when we started our project. That's somewhat of a difficult size to locate unless there are some larger industrial supply houses near you. Just a tip, you may want to start out with a Knight vision breechplug that's tapped for a #11 nipple. It will give you more clearance ahead of your bolt body to make proper modifications. The breechplug nose can be machined to fit up into the bore and you can modify it to take a Savage style vent liner. Good luck on your project.

I am curious because I don't have a tap chart that lists an 11/16 x 20 as a size and I was beginning to think it may be metric. Why do they do that? Harley used to run a funky 1/4" thread that is rarely used.
As I am writing this the UPS man shows up with my Travers tool master catalouge. They list the tap under High Speed Steel Special Thread Taps 11/16" x 20 for 21 bucks.
I wanted to know because I am trying to find a small lathe to play with (I am going to look at one today) and my first project is going to be a breech plug.

This is just a wild guess, but I think it may be to discourage guys like you and me from getting hold of a grade 8 5/8" or 3/4" capscrew and making our own breechplug on our lathes. I know that cutting threads on the lathe is beyond my skill level. Check you new catalog to see if they have a 11/16"-20 dies. Then you could run threads on some 3/4" round and viola! You're on your way. "

I live in that world.Maintaining large equipment allows me the availability to get any kind of stock that I would need for projects like this. Most of it would be scrap with no issue as to whether I had to come by it in less than legal manners.I'm really kind of surprized that I didn't have to 11/16 x 20 tap in my tool box.
This Travers outfit I was recently turned on to has the tap as well as a host of other special taps that fall into the special thread catagory.
This outfit sent me a free 1400 page order book loaded with quality tools. So far the prices are resonable.Check them out:Travers.com

MSC and Production Tool have those taps too, KBC probably does also.
The TC Encores are 11/16 x 20 also
