Hi, new one here. Thanks for having me. Have been hunting with the Savage for years now and was glad to see so much has been done with smokeless ML's?
Have a small lathe and was wanting to make a breech plug for my switch barrel mod. 7 Remington. I have a .308 and .358 Win barrels for testing. Will the .308 Win. chamber be a problem to thread?
The breech plug for the Remington looks like it could be somewhat simple to make? Is there some specs? I think I saw somewhere it is two piece?
Knight plug 900023 and the nipple 900012 are being used by a custom maker on-line. Looks like he is selling a how to DVDs on the smokeless ML he is making?
If I don't get cold feet on this adventurer there will be a .40 or .45 cal going on the switch barrel as well.

If you are going to use rifle powder you better look at the Savage plug. It is made to stand up to the pressure of the rifle powders. You can use a ventliner or a bushing in the plug with a 209 primer. Just make sure you use some thing like 4140 hardened to make the plug. You do not want it to come out the back of the gun. The Knight plug will not work it would be unsafe to use. Go what a plug like the Savage to be safe.

spoonover Richards custom rifles uses that plug in there guns and they are shooting 78 grains h4198 with a 275 grain bulletI think you will be alright going with that plug and nipple I'm going to start working on something like that myself for one of my guns.

The important part is the vent liner or a drill bushing with the correct dia hole . That will help keep the pressure were it belongs. The plug can be made from a grade 8 bolt if you are worried about the plug you mentioned. But I think you will find, the plug is plenty strong and all you have to do is add the vent.

Using the knight plug with the nipple that spoonover stated I don't believe it uses a ventliner I think the plug itself is .030" - .033". But I could be wrong.

Does not use a vent, but can have one installed. The plug may wear fast depending on hardness so adding the vent or drill bushing allows you rebuild and reuse it. The plugs I build could have a drilled hole as the Knight does but I add the Drill bushing and get many extra shots.

You are right, I was referring to Richards custom m/l plug that he uses.

Joe, would the .45ACP CASE be in use on your plug or the 209 shotgun primer? The Savage vent liner concept is that the Drill bushing you are talking about? Adding a Drill bushing for the many extra shots would be top of of the line.
Richards custom m/l plug is the one I was referring to when starting this post.
How much could be trimmed off the diameter of a .40 CAL barrel @20" long? Target weight minimal would be six pounds, scoped. The .358 Win. weighs five pounds being my pig gun (have not looked up felt recoil), 270/WSM @ 5.5 pounds = 41 LBS felt recoil.
Wounder what the ML's felt recoil would be at six pounds, or would this be completely out of hand? When still hunting and backpacking light is the way, been on some hunts only to fire one shot in nine days and never did feel the recoil!

I think 70grs of H4198, with a 350gr Barnes X bullet, in a six pound rifle, would make for interesting shooting, not fun, but interesting. I'll let others try and report back to us sissies.

If you practice using a Lead Sled I think that you would be OK...not sure about your scope though edge.

SNIP. If you practice using a Lead Sled I think that you would be OK...not sure about your scope though edge. Have been using a sand bag on shoulder to site in with, lead sled would work? Would like to keep it down for field use. 70grs of H4198, with a 350gr Barnes X bullet (no way). Been having fun shooting 200 grain @ 2600 out of the 5lbs .358, a .40cal @ six pounds 200 grain 2600 would be close? Will need to pull the trigger to find out the fun facts? Would like to see Dave D's Plug (45ACP), it looks to be top of the line as plugs go! Not sure I would have the skill to make one that complex?
