smokeater, The guy at the gun store said the regular 4759 is for shotguns and the sr 4759 is a slow burning rifle powder. Have you used both with no dissernable difference. This will be the first time I have shot my ml10 and just want to be sure. Thank you sir Rusty

Rusty, IMR SR 4759 is what you want. IMR - (improved military rifle), SR- (sporting rifle) is a relatively fast burning rifle powder designed for reduced loads in centerfire rifles. It also happens to work well in our application. It is one of the Savage recommended powders.

Not sure what the XM is but I think the R is for rifle. There was also XMP where the P was for pistol. Now it is AA5744 and it is all the same. Probably was then. Maybe Rossman40 can bail us out here because I'm betting he actually knows. 5744 is a double based powder know for extreme reliability to go bang in all conditions, builds pressure quickly which results in very little temperature sensitivity but is criticized by some because you get slightly lower velocities and it's relatively tough on ventliners. 5744 and 4759 are both recommended powders and both have loyal followers among the board members.

I have found that I usually know way more than the gun store clerks. I wonder where they get some of the stuff they spout, and how close some of their customers get to being injured.
