I read on this board [ I think ] that the horn 250 gr sst with supplied sabot shoot very well in someones savage with 40.5 grs AA 5744. The ones I purchased came with a red sabot and it says new and improved for easy loading. Could anyone please tell me if this is IT. Thank you. Rusty

Basically most of these pre-packs are aimed towards BP or sub MLs, which don't require as tight a fit to get ignition. The smokeless powders we use require good seating pressure for good ignition, but the 5744 you're using has a rep of being one that almost always go boom, I think.
These red sabots are thinner which is why they load easier. If they give you reasonable seating pressure, they may work for you, but if they load real easy, I personally wouldn't have a lot of confidence in the field with them.

It depends on how tight your barrel is. Mine is extremely tight, but my Savage loves the 300gr SST with the supplied red sabot. Also I am using 42gr of IMR 4759. I can clover leaf at a 100 yards

5744 Boom every time I have fired. Never a failure to fire... never.. I use 43 grains along with a 250 or 300 XTP (non magun) hornady.

I have to agree with Tim1jr. My rifle also has a tight bore and just loves the 300 sst with the red sabots. They are noticably easier to load than my BCR/BO combo which made me nervous at first, but last summer on the range and all through this hunting season they have proven themselves with great accuracy and no failures.
