Wintertime allows some free time for planning and preparation for Spring shooting experimenting. Last Spring it was a total failure with the 200-XPB and I put it on the backburner for a bit. After reading of Art338’s success with knurling the 275XPB I am going to revisit the 200XPB using his approach of expanding the diameter as much as .004”. With the one direction knurl this bullet is now .455” instead of .451”. Also I made the knurl running the same direction as the rifling. Just have to make a sufficient amount for my first basic test and run some through the bore to see which Harvester sabot will be the best fit to try first. My 200SST duplex experiment preparation is already completed and now just need to finish my 200XPB preparations. The quest for a 200gr bullet load in my 50 is on again with 2-hopefuls this time. Hey a break has to come my way sooner or later for achieving this goal. ;D The only problem now is Spring is a little ways away. Ed

How did you prep the 200SST?

Tar12 After all that good food over the holidays it’s hard enough to suck it up (mid section) in a warm house. ;D As for the Cold test I got a dandy right now with the shimmy, shimmy, shake, shakes (Cold Chills). Wouldn’t you know it that after the H1N1 shot and another regular flu shot the common cold still slips in there. My goal is to start out near hunting temps and if good results obtained then move into summer temps before celebrating. If I can’t get decent results in normal Hunting Temp conditions then there’s no sense going further. 153 For the 200SST I just put a few cannelures around it. This bullet will obturate with hopes that some of the 45 green sabot will be forced into the cannelured area. The 45 sabot has had the base-cup cut off so that a nice flat fit in the BCR will produce a thicker and stronger base platform. The BCR sabot has been trimmed about a 1/32” below the green 45 sabot in hope that the green sabot will control the bullet release. Rangeball Thanks for your expressed support. You’re not the only one that wants to see the results. For now I sleep with a Dream Catcher overhead to ward off any nightmares of failure again. ;D Ed

I do not know if it makes any difference but I think full bore shotgun slugs have rifling the opposite direction of the rifling in the barrel. I looked at some slugs around the house but could not tell with out cutting one apart so I maybe wrong.

Don't really know if the direction of the knurl will make a difference but thought to play it safe because the rifling impression from the lands on a bullet of course run the same direction. Ed

ET.........Are you trying to debunk the theory that thinner sabot walls are more accurate? With all that plastic, it will be a good debunk if it works ;D What is the overall dimension (diameter) of the bullet and two sabots? Richard

ET.........Are you trying to debunk the theory that thinner sabot walls are more accurate? With all that plastic, it will be a good debunk if it works ;D What is the overall dimension (diameter) of the bullet and two sabots? Richard Not trying to debunk the theory but feel the original 40-50 sabot from MMP is not as a strong a plastic composition as I now have. With a little firmness I get .507"-.508" and it is not all that easy going down even with the BCR. I have also toyed with the blue 40-50 sabot and don't believe the 200SST ever seated inside on the base. Those petals really flared out and was difficult if you tried pushing the bullet to the inside base outside the bore. If any space existed between the bullet and base and the bullet was allowed movement during the acceleration process you would get drilling through 1 base layer of plastic. With my current setup for experimenting the bullet easily sets on the base, that is double re-enforced with better quality plastic IMO. Hopefully with a contact seating of bullet on the base like most sabot/bullet combinations I hope to avoid drilling. Will see how all this hypothetical reasoning adds up when the load is tested. My goal is not a velocity race with the 45 because as stated earlier I would be more than happy with a load 2500-2600fps giving less recoil and slight flatter trajectory than my current 250SW load. I've always felt that a lighter bullet than 250SW could be used in the 10ML-II with decent accuracy. Just not ready to relinquish that belief until I have exhausted all avenues of trying. If this should fail then there's still the 200FTX waiting it's turn. Just stubborn I guess. ;D Ed

ET, I am not promising anything, but where I like to shoot in NW IN is going to experience a slight worming trend over the next two weeks, hopefully and with a little luck and some cooperation from the weather (low wind) I will get out sometime next week to finally finish my 200 yard testing of both 290 grain TMZs and 245 grain Spitfires. This week is out of the question as I have a serious commitment I must fill that will occupy the remainder of the week and possibly a little longer.
Arthur.

Your approach of deeper knurling into copper bullets sort of boostered my desire to get back into the 200XPB testing. That knurl should put a bite into the sabot and hopefully give it good RPM stabilization that I originally believed my first try lacked. I’m not expecting a time frame for your results but really look forward to hearing your results.

Some how I missed your post for the well wish for my experiment and better health, Thanks. And am starting on the mend after a good rest this past weekend.
