rmclaughlin ............In your question you talk about "what is good for free floating your barrel?" To free float your barrel you need to create space underneath it. That is usually accomplished by "hogging" out the barrel channel. You need plenty of room with a Savage synthetic since they are so easily bent when pressure is put on them. And of course, the Savage synthetic is so thin to start with, you can't really remove too much material as you further degrade the integrity of that forend. Maybe, your question was more in regard to stiffening the forend and still maintaining barrel clearance? That becomes a longer post! ;D The best solution is to either get a DuraMax synthetic or a laminate stock. Richard

a couple of years ago i posted pictures of glass bedding and third pillar in my tupperware stock. i installed a block of ala. in the existing hole. drilled a lot of holes in it so glass would grab it and into stock. worked out real well. clayman

When I did a full receiver bedding to my synthetic stock I took some thin cardboard for providing clearance and centering to stock. This thin cardboard was placed at the end of the stock where the barrel met the stock. Once the bedding cured the barrel stayed centered.
But you also need to address the contact point of recoil lug to stock with bedding, which IMO is a critical point for accuracy.
