When I open the action on my ML II, I can't easily slide the bolt rearward; whether I have fired a shot, or not.
I can raise and lower the bolt handle several times but it will still not open unless I bang my fist on it a couple of times to force it rearward.
I don't see any obvious signs of binding on the bolt and additional lube doesn't seem to help. Any suggestions?
Thanks in advance!

This seems to happen quite a bit. What I suspect is that the action screw is a bit too long.Try loosening the rear action screw (the one in front of the trigger guard) a couple of turns and see if that frees it up.If so,take the screw out and file the end of it down a little bit and you should be good to go. ~~~ Rich

I think what is happening is when you close the bolt loading a primer you are forcing the primer into its hole in the breech plug and it does have to fit somewhat tight. What is happening the primer is sticking in there and it takes some force to get it to come loose. If it is too severe it may be time to clean your breech plug.

Use a file to take off a little off the top of the rear action screw. If you tighten the rear action screw real tight it tends to hit the bolt and bind causing what you are experiencing. I also put a small amount of lube in the bolt slot which helps the bolt slide. Mike

The action screw is probably the culprit as stated above. You want that screw very snug so the only option is to shorten the screw....usually 1/32" is enough.

To narrow it down does it do it with a primer in and does it work freely without a primer. If it sticks without a primer then the rear action screw is the culprit. If it only sticks with a primer then you need to clean/polish the primer pocket in the breechplug.

Sorry, I've been gone for the holidays and was unable to check this thread... I just worked the action without a primer and it worked fine. It seems like the problem happens when a primer is installed, whether I shoot or not. I shoot Federal primers.
I only shoot 10 shots or so per year and the BP and ventliner are generally clean so I don't remove and clean it each year. I just stuck my little finger up near the primer pocket and it was very dirty.
I think the BP needs a thorough cleaning and polishing.
Also, I know from reloading shotshells that primers vary in size by brand. Should I consider Winchester or CCI primers instead of the Federals? I believe the Federals are slightly larger in diameter.
Thanks in advance!

you can try a different primer. I beleave some have reemed the primer pocket and even put a bevel on it to get the primers to load easier.

When I first got my Savage I had a similar problem. When I went to close the bolt with a primer in it sometimes it would be real hard to close and sometimes it wouldn't close at all. I switched to Winchester W209 primers and it took care of the problem all together.

The primer holder in the front of the bolt is not ideal. Often the primer is fed into the BP at an angle rather than straight. This forces the BP primer pocket to force the canted primer to straighten up before it can accept it. I see the problem as a feeding problem that usually works itself out with wear. Changing primers sometimes help.
