What bullet starter are you guys using on the Barnes Originals? I am going to revisit these bullets again and am looking for a starter that won't deform the lead tips. Back when these bullets were just coming into vogue, I tried some with the orange MMP's and the bullet starter's tip I used had too small of an opening to get down on the ogive of the bullet and was deforming the lead tip when starting it. Same way with the tip I had on my range rod back then. I now use a Spinjag Loader on my range rod, but am looking for a short starter for these bullets. Has anyone used the SpinJag Starter? It looks kind of interesting. Let me know what you are using.
I've got some BO's and BCR's on the way and this is the only thing I feel I need to sort out before trying them again.

Believe it or not the starter that Harvester makes that costs about $3 bucks from Midsouth Shooters Supply works great on pointed bullets. They must have tweaked their design of it since issuing them with our Savages. My original that came with the Savage was not bored to fit the points. My new one from MSS is improved. It helps with the deep hole in the ball to place atop your ram rod to get the stubborn ones seated too. Also PR bullet makes a little wee rod insert for the ram rod that works great also.

I use a Powerbelt short starter, it comes with like 3 sets of different tips and 3 each of those. Probly the toughest bullet is a Parker BE with it's slender tip.

I add one of the plastic tips that come with PRbullets to my starters and rods. I have a lot of these leftover. If you want some I can send some to you.

I use a powerbelt starter like Rossman but put an SST starter in it (it's threaded) for BOs. Seems to fit perfect. Get a .45 cal and you'll never have an issue with sabots even if you use long ones.

You guys that said you use the Spinjag, are you referring to the Spinjag short starter pictured below, or are you just talking about the Spinjag that you use on your ramrod or rangerod? I've got a Spinjag loader and an original Spinjag on my rangerods but I'm specifically looking for a loading jag for a short starter that will fit the profile of the BO's without deforming the lead tip. I like to short start my bullets/sabots before finishing the job with a T-handled range rod.

I've got the SuperRat from PRBullet, haven't tried any BO's yet but it fits SST's and similar pointed bullets.

I also use the spinjag with the 300 grain BOs,however i turned a piece of plastic on the lathe to replace the black plastic piece. This one fits perfecly over the end of the barrel so it doesn't slide around like the stock one.Spinjag folks feel free to contact me if you like it. [/img]

Littlejoe, I like that customized Spinjag starter.....nice! However, for the time being, I've done a little customizing to a Powerbelt starter's jags. It's the same starter that Rossman40 and DBinNY are using. I'll find out how it fits the Barnes Originals today and post a pic later.

I just took delivery today of a Spinjag Starter. It looks like a fantastic piece of equipment. It will work perfect with the Barnes Original's soft lead tip. I tried to ream out the brass starter tips on my Powerbelt starter but I couldn't get quite the angle I needed with the tools I had at my disposal. It will work great with polymer tipped bullets but wouldn't go down on the shoulder far enough to not damage the B.O.'s lead while short starting it. The problem has been solved though with the purchase of the Spinjag Loader. Thanks to all who gave their input in this thread.

I have been using the Max Muzzleloader spinning jag in my .50, and it fits the BO very well, but now that I have a PacNor .45 barrel on one of my Savages, I need a smaller jag. I sent an email to the mfg asking if they make a .45 jag for their spinner, but they have not responded. I have not looked at local sporting stores to see if a generic jag tip will fit this Max doobie. I also need a .45 jag for my Tipton Range rod, that I use to swab between shots.

boarhog, I got a .45 spinjag here: www.spinjag.com/index.phpI got the loading one, not the cleaning one so I can't comment on the difference.
