In the past there was a special fishing day enjoyed each year. This happened on the Saturday before Fathers Day. It’s about 2-hrs to drive northward to a Lake where a good friend lives. He lives right on the lakefront on a hilltop. Below is the boathouse that houses the boat decked out with downriggers along the back.
The day starts out around 2am as one of three of us begins the round of picking up 2-other fellows. Then the journey northward begins with one stop over for breakfast around 4:15am. By the time we reach our friends home it’s just shortly after 5am. We are always greeted by our friend John and then take all our gear down to the boathouse. Here John opens the door for the boat and sets it in the water by an electric winch/trolley setup. All our gear is put on board and we head out even before sunrise.
Once we reach our starting locations the lines are set out for trolling. Then it’s a waiting game until one of the riggers is setoff signaling a fish is on. During the slow time we often just chat away getting caught with fishing/hunting adventures or what ever the topic comes up. Now keep in mind this time of year up here can have really nice warm weather or real cold weather in June. The picture below with John shows a regular size caught lake trout and it was a cold year.
Also in front of the boat are 2-sleeping bunks if anyone gets tired. One year I had to work late on Friday and catch a few hours rest in one of these bunks as I was the DD (designated driver) to drive home later in the day. I can still remember the gentle rocking of the boat and slight tapping of water against the hull that quickly lulled me into a restful sleep for a few hours.
Around 12-1pm we would call it a day and return to the dock at John’s home. Here we were greeted with a fabulous lunch prepared by John’s wife. Afterwards we would clean any fish caught that day and spend some time socializing until around 5-6pm. Then the DD would chauffer the rest of the gang on that 2-hr drive home. It’s been a few years since I have done this because of demands from my job but I think I need to set some of my priorities in life in order again.
