I shoot a Savage 10ML II smokeless with smokeless powder as my primary, but my back up gun is a Austin & Halleck currently shooting Triple 7....This rifle has a percussion cap nipple and breach plug... My question is has anyone tried the Black Horn 209 with a percussion cap....

#11 and musket caps just are not enough to ignite it reliably. I see PRBullet has a 209 conversion kit for the A & H; www.prbullet.com/ah.htm

I was contemplating converting a knight rifle to a 209 system but it is also supposed to be a closed breech design to use BH209. Bolt action, breakaction or something like that. My rifle wasn't so I didn't do it. You may want to check that out before you make a conversion. Not an expert, but just a suggestion. DH

elkboy, I was on the phone a couple of days ago with Accurate Arms talking about using Blackhorn in my Savage, which I decided against. But they were very helpful, and if you want to talk to their lab technician, he is Don Moore @ (406)234-0422. He may be able to help you, since they test their powders in different BP rifles, which they have there. Good luck.

I tried BH 209 in my Muzzleloading Technologies White Model 97 with both #11 cap (did not fire at all) and musket cap. With the musket cap (requires a different breech plug because the nipple on the White is part of the breech plug) it hang-fired once, the 3 other attempts didn't produce any sort of ignition. My conclusion is that the statement from Western Powder Co. (the manufacturer of BH209) is true that BH209 needs the hotter fire from a 209 shotgun primer to ignite....hence the "209" part of the name. Of course, your results may vary, but I'd be interested to hear what happens if you try BH209 with a cap.
