Well, no, I did not get my .45 yet but..............I got the opportunity to play with "Jons." I had put his new Pac-Nor barrel on, bedded (with the third pillar) his action and installed a Kick-Eze recoil pad. Jon said to play with it for a while as he was "snowed-in!" I actually got it to the range last week but did not have time to do much with it other than put it on paper and chrono a couple of shots.
So today I spent a little more time with it. While today's results are not outstanding, it is a beginning of what I believe will be an accurate barrel. Let me set some parameters first off. Jon did not send his scope or mounts so I installed a set of Savage aluminum mounts/rings and the "El-Cheapo" Simmons 3x9 scope that they give you with their "package rifle!" The Savage trigger is also not what the Rifle Basix trigger is on my rifle. I only had the MMP tan sabots and the knight brown sabots to work with along with .40 XTP's. Jon had included some Barnes 180 gr. bullets with a light blue colored sabot. I did shoot these last week but was not impressed. Anyway, the Barnes/blue sabots measured out at .452" The XTP/tan sabot measured at .457" VERY tight. I did not shoot any of the Knights, but they measured at .456". Note, the Barnes bullets mic at .399" So, the slightly smaller diameter bullet and the blue sabot (maybe Harvesters?) account for the difference in diameter.
From last weeks shooting of the Barnes combo, I got an av. vel. of 2735 fps using 63 gr. of H-4198. Since it was raining when I first got to the range, I did not initially set up the chrono and fired six rounds before it stopped and only recorded the last shot at 2760 fps. (XTP, tan mmp and 63 gr. H-4198) The much tighter fit produced about 25 fps more velocity.
If you read the synopsis on my sheet for group one, you will see that the combination has definite possibilities but needs tweaking. I examined all my fired sabots and some look more "dog-eared" than others. I did not start picking them up until after I had fired groups one and two (a duplex producing close to the same velocity). The three duplex loads were given to me as a start (be it going up or down) by SW.
Since I was unable to get my order of SST's from Mid-South (back ordered) along with Harvester blue and blue crush ribs, todays shooting was limited. Tomorrow I will send the rifle back to Jon and he can set it up with his scope and see how it does for him. Right now, I'm just waiting for mine so I can do some serious shooting.
NOTE: On my sheet I made a statement to note how close in velocity shots one and two are (group 2)...Shot #1 was 2740 (I left the zero off)
Thanks Jon for letting me play with your rifle.
