What bullet should work best for my 8 year old grandson's 50 cal. ? I will be using 60 grains for black powder. The bullet would need some expansion from this low velocity load. Do you think a jacketed bullet will work or should I use pure lead? Thanks, Barry

patched round ball or a 223gr Hollow point powerbelt will do the trick. Maybe even use the pure lead powerbelt, not the copper coated powerbelt.

Mu daughter shoots 70 grains of FFF Goex or 65 gr of 3F Swiss behind the 223 gr powerbelt or jump the loading 5 grains heavier and patched roundball. Don't worry about "expansion". A 50 cal boolit is already much larger than most 30-30 bullets ever expand. The pure lead patched roundball will expand as will the powerbelts even at relative low velocity. I suggest just behind the shoulder in the rib shots. The roundball or powerbelt will nice exit wounds in all but the largest deer. I killed a 227 lb whitetail with a rib shot with my 50 shooting roundball back before we could use inlines here in VA. It was a through complete pentration shot. It was 75 gr of 3f Swiss behind a 187 gr patched roundball. It is accurate to 100 yds. The longest shot I took was 93 yards and that was a through full exit shot too but on a 162 lb buck. That is plenty of power and will take any deer with proper shot placement. Good Luck, 10 ga
