Ive been working on some different loads at the range lately. I've been shooting 250g bullets mostly in the 2500-2600 fps range (both single powders and duplex) with not much luck in the accuracy department. So picked up a bottle of N110 a couple of weeks ago and got a chance to do some shooting over the weekend. On Saturday I shot one 3 shot group each with 41, 42, 43, & 44gr under 250gr Shockwaves with Harvester Black sabots to get a feel for speeds. I shot 3 shot groups of each and was surprised on how fast these loads were. Here are the three shot averages. The speed below were recorded 10 ft from the muzzle
41g: 2290 fps
42g: 2368 fps
43g: 2426 fps
44g: 2496 fps
For comparison a 44g charge of SR4759 only yields about 2280 with the same combo.
Temp was a balmy 15* F.
41 & 42 shot the best with the 3 shot 41g group just over 1" C to C and the 42g group about 1.5".
On Sunday I shot 5 shot groups with 41.5g and 42g with the regular 250 Shockwaves and one 42g group with the 250 Bonded Shockwave. I also shot one 5 shot group with 58g N120 and the 300g Shockwave. Below are the groups. Temp was about 10* with a steady light breeze in my face.
41.5g N110, 250 SW, Harvester Black Sabot
42g N110, 250 SW, Harvester Black Sabot (target says 1 1/8" but it is actually closer to 1 1/4")
42g N110, 250 BSW, Harvester Black Sabot
58g N120, 300 SW, Harvester Black Sabot
I like the way N110 is shooting so far and I like the speed I'm getting with the amount of powder that I'm using. Recoil is very comfortable. For comparision 65g of N120 was shooting about 2470 and with N110 I'm getting almost 2500 fps with only 44g of powder. Also, the 58g N120 & 300 SW shot pretty good too. It was one of the first loads I tried in the Savage and I kind of use it as a baseline load.
I also shot my hunting load of 67g H4198 and 300 BO 3 times and got my normal 1.25" group at 100 yds and velocity was about 2388 fps. Thats about 12 fsp slower than it shoots at 35*.
My next trial will be to see if the 250 Bonded likes a different speed as I'd prefer to use that rather than the regular Shockwave. I also want to get some more Red Crush Ribs sabots. I like the way the regular Harvester shoots but I wish it loaded a little tighter. I may try a light knurl on the Shockwaves next time.
I've all but given up on the 250 Barnes TEZ flat based bullet. I've shot that thing from 2200 to almost 2700 fps and can't seem to get that bullet to shoot. I'll put those on the back burner for now. If I ever get the urge/opportunity to go with a 45 Pac-Nor that bullet would be my first choice to try sabotless.
