It was a balmy 15 degrees this afternoon. Slight breeze in my face.
I had 9 loads premeasured. 4 ea 8/60 4759/4198
4 ea 10/60 4759/4198
1 ea 10/40 4759/Varget
.458 300 grain Hornady #4500 with HPH24 sabots. Load pressure runs at 85 pounds to get past the QLA 70 pounds travel down the barrel and over 100 to seat. Not for everyone, new experiences have shown the folly in leaving the bullet starter on the bench in the basement.
The ML has one wet with Hoppes patch over a bronze brush run through followed by two dry over the same brush. I did not dip the brush only the patch.
!st shot 2322 fps approx 5 inches high. Typical for my ML to shoot high when clean.
2nd and 3rd shot 2331 fps
4th 2322 fps
Shots 2,3,&4 7/8 inch ctc
Adjusted scope 20 clicks to right and 8 back to the left. I needed 3 inches to the right.
10/60 loads
1st shot 2398 fps
2nd and 3rd 2411 fps
4th 2415 fps
Discounting the first shot, I normally do this, experience taught me that most scopes need a shot to seat the erector tube after adjustment. I shot a 3 1/4 high by 1 3/8 wide group.
I was happy to see that accuracy fell off with the stouter 10/60 loads. I am not sure if I met Kerry's definition of high recoil or not. I will count my teeth in the morning. The 8/60 loads were not bad. The tuperware stock has a way of coming up under my cheek bone.
The 10/40 4759/varget was a whim mostly because the powder was on the bench. However it achieved a respectable 1633 fps. The Varget is a strange powder that seems to work fairly well with many different centerfire loads.
