Went out for a little rainbow trout fishing today in a local lake (Devils Kitchen) on the Crab Orchard National Wildlife Refuge. My father and i caught 30-35 nice trout on Panther Martin spinners. We didn't keep any, but it was a perfect day for catch and release fishing. The water which is around 90ft deep is crystal clear and the conditions were 55 degrees with a light north wind. The trout were right on the surface and many times they would swirl or jump, at which time we would cast right to the fish. Most of the time the trout would hit as soon as the lure hit the water. The majority of the trout were 1 1/2 lbs, but a couple went 2 1/2lbs or so. The highlight of the day was spotting a migratory flock of white pelicans riding thermals and sailing south. There were probably 75 birds in the flock and they were beautiful in the sunlight against the bright blue sky. Should have remembered the camera, but didn't.........

Sounds like a touch of heaven to me. Trout fishing is my favorite but nothing like a beautiful day to go along with a good catch.

Been back a couple of times and the trout fishing has been pretty good. Catching them by casting spinners around the shore and when the bite slows down, we troll the same spinners around the main lake basin which works even if they aren't biting well.
