Hello to all on this board. I am presently looking for a Savage ML rifle and would appreciate any thoughts on where I can get one for the best price.
Also, I was thinking about installing a peep sight on the Savage to use it for target and deer hunting. In Colorado we can't use optical sights (scopes) so open sights is as good as it gets. I was thinking that a good adjustable rear peep sight with the standard front sight would extend the sight radius and make the rifle more accurate than with the standard open sights. Does anyone know where I can get a peep sight that would just screw into the predrilled scope holes on the receiver?

As far as a hunting sight there is the Williams WGRS receiver sight but if I remember right you have to install a slightly taller front sight on the Accutrigger receivers. Williams makes the OEM sights so it is no big deal (the front sight is $18.95 and the WGRS is $36.95). They even have a fiber optic set-up for the reap aperture.
Another option would be a sight that attaches to the rear scope base. This would let you mount your scope for range work and then all you would have to do is remove the scope and attach the peep sight. XS Sight Systems makes one ($65) that comes with two different apertures and they make one that is threaded so you can use Merit or Williams aperture disk. N.E.C.G. also makes one that will take the screw in disk and comes with two ($85). You may also have to install a slightly taller front sight with these.
You could mount a more target style like a Lyman or Williams Foolproof (they call them the FP now). These are a bit more bulk and you have to drill and tap the side of the receiver.

If you really want a nice one, check out Sinclair Int. www.sinclairintl.com/ They have really nice ones that install on your scope base. It is a good company too. Richard should be able to vouch for them, they sell alot to the benchrest community.

Your decision to go to the peep type sight is wise. There are sound reasons for using a peep sight. Permit me to return to teaching..... The eye is incapable of focusing clearly on more than one distance or object. In shooting with open sights there are three objects; the target, the front sight and the rear sight. It is a bad habit to switch focus from one to the other and back. It is also bad to target gaze. The correct method is to focus clearly on the front sight blade and permit the rear and the target to be seen out of focus and somewhat fuzzy. With this in mind, it has been found that the eye automatically seeks the center of a circle whether it is large or small. Therefore, your best shooting will be done with a peep style rear, a flat front and the acceptance of the eyes best use. I might end with: Some of you will be chosen as members of our team and some of you will be cut and returned to your units. All that makes it will accept this lesson as gospel and apply it while at the range. Good luck. I hope to be with you when we go the the National Matches at Camp Perry.......................................

Peep sights are great. If you get the Williams, you want to take out the aperture (peep) and just use it that way.

As far as what Craig said, yes, Sinclair International is one of the major players in the benchrest game. A top shelf outfit to deal with. They have a lot of my money Richard

Come on guys, you would actually put a Centra Long Range on a 200yd hunting rifle? By the time you added the front can and all the other goodies you would have a $600-700 brush catcher. Here is a butcher job of a Williams FP on a Savage The WGRS is much more streamlined, The N.E.G.S. weaver mount is pretty rugged and streamlined, the XS low weaver back up is low,

I live in a state where Metallic sights are the only sight that is legal in the muzzle loader season. My family and I have used peep sights successfully for years. They are a good choice over conventional open sights. On the savage I went with the Williams WGRS peep sight that mounts on the gun using the screw holes for the rear scope base. I also went with the largest aperture with the Ghost Ring. It works for me. Don't use a small target aperture thinking it will be more accurate for hunting. You have no field of view and you will not find your target. Like Rossman said, you will find that your front sight is too low with this Williams sight and you will have to raise it. There is one exception to our states rule. If you can get an eye doctor to fill out the proper form you can then use a 1X scope. No magnification.

There was another setup I saw on this forum somewhere, of a picture of a one piece scope base with a built in peep sight in the rear. I can't find it back and the brand I never heard of. It did look interesting. Did anybody else see it?

DH,
Using WGRS aperture, do you recall what you did for the front sight?

Hi youp50, I first wrote to Savage and they sent me a front sight but it was the same as the first one. I ended up making a ramp out of a piece of 3/4" abs plastic pipe. filed it down so it didn't look too bad, Got some longer screws and I was good to go. I think that raised it around an 1/8 or 3/16" . Not classy but some black paint and you didn't really notice it. They make so much out of plastic anyway. Hey it matches the plastic stock. Now I qualify for using the 1X scope. If you are to the point where you need tri-focals you qualify and an eye doctor will fill out the form. You get the form from the DNR. I had no problem getting it. I now use a Burris Short Mag 1X scope with Warne mounts. There isn't a lot of scopes to choose from. T.C. also makes one. If your looking for the correct front sight to use it sounds like rossman had the answer for that.

According to Williams when using the WGRS-SAV for the Accutrigger receiver you have to change the front bead to a 538M (.538 tall, medium dovetail). If you have a flat top pre-Accutrigger receiver you use the WGRS-KN and no modification is needed for the front sight.
Some body was making a scope base for the Encore that had a WGRS built on to the rear.
XS Sights makes a scope base for a Remy that has the peep aperture built in.
Talley will also make you a peep sight that fits onto the Talley base. It is a custom job so it takes awhile.

Thanks. Minnesota may see my nr money again in the future. Wisconsin allows 1x scopes and the trifocal thing has been a fact of life for several years. I always needed an aperture sight, in the heat of the moment I would seldom tuck the bead in the buckhorn and shoot somewhere over the back.
Rossman, its been said before but you have good information. Many are the post that I figure is your forte and lo there you show up with the goods.
