I am new to muzzleloading and would like to now what thickness patches I should get for roundballs. i have a traditions youth yukon 50 cal and hornady lead round balls .490 blackhorn209 powder. I have never fired it yet. After reading on here it seems this gun is not the best out there but i figure if i like it ill buy something better. Thanks Jason

Hey jamsk, I believe the Yukon has a 1:28" twist. That fast rate of twist is not likely to shoot patched balls real well. You're going to pretty well be limited to light charges with balls. As for patch thickness, you might try starting with regular pillow tick which is usually in the neighborhood of .018 thick. I suggest you give sabotted bullets a try also. You will likely have better luck with them. The Hornady 240 grain XTPs are a good starting poing. www.midsouthshooterssupply.com/item.asp?sku=000036727

Ditto for what semisane posted. For hunting I shoot 85 gr of 3F Swiss. You might also try powerbelts in the 245 gr range. My Firehawk is same twist and over about 50 gr of powder RBs get wild. My best accuracy has been with 250 SST. It will shoot less than 2" at 100 yds all day with them. It will shoot 4" at 100 yds. = MOA of deer with the 240 - 260+- sabots of most any kind. I find the TC "cheap shots", they come in 30 packs, shoot as good as anything more expensive except the SST. Good Luck. 10 ga

semisane is correct. your gun is a 1:28 twist wich is a bit fast for patch& RB. is there a reason you want to use RB? usually 1:48 is the fastest you want to go with RB.

Thanks for the help. I only want to use roundballs next year in CO for antelopemzzle season since you have to use round lead balls. A friend gave me some TC shockwave spire point sabots 250 gr to try so i was going to use them to sight the gun in thanks everyone for the replys I have learned a lot from all the post on this site and i still have a lot to learn lol

this is what the regs say (must be single-barrel that fires a single round-ball or conical projectile the length of which does not exceed twice the diameter.)and (sabots are prohibited in muzzel season.) so i take that as roundballs only but if there is something else let me now.

Those maxi balls look like they might work if they are not twice the dia . I was thinking of going out and shooting the gun today and suggestion for the first shots?

My brother lives in CO. and he uses R.E.A.L. boolits that I cast for him. If you PM me I'll make arrangements to send you some to try out of the next batch I cast. They are 270 gr and comply with the CO full bore and length less than 2X dia. They shoot real good in most faster twist guns so long as you don't try to shoot too high a velocity and they are much more effieient than RBs. Suggestion for first shots with RB: start at 40 gr powder and work up in 5 gr increments. Use the .490 RB and .018 patch. Lube patches well and start the ball with a short starter, it will be tight to start into the barrel, seat firmly on the powder charge. Shoot 3 shot groups and then clean the barrel. When the shots start to get wild and you think you need a full choke shotgun instead of a ML you are at the max load for the RB venture. Oh Yeah, The blackhorn can be corrosive so clean up good at the end of the day. 10 ga

a maxi ball would be legal as long as it it no longer than 1 inch in a 50 cal. i think 10 ga put a good offer on the table.

You will find round balls out of a fast twist barrel nearly impossible to shoot accurately. Even 1 in 48 is too fast a twist for opitium accuracy for a round ball. A thompson center 50 cal Maxiball is .887 of an inch long and there fore should be legal. They will weigh about 370 grains I think. They would be a much better choice than round balls. When I shot them out of a TC Hawken I used between 70 and 90 grains of black powder.
