I'm in shock. I missed the same groundhog at less than 10-yards two nights in a row! I set my Omega Scope on 3-power because I knew he would come out close. And did he! It was less than 10-yards when he popped out of no where. My Triumph and I have been constant companions all summer, taking hogs out to 124-yards with the scope set mostly on 6X. I never shot the ML on 3X before, preferring 6X--the same power I carry all my scopes on when hunting whitetails. My confidence level was high, and now this, right before deer season starts. I checked the rings and the bases and there snug, any idea what went wrong? Have a great day! Dave

A target at 100yds will answer all your doubts. More then likely it's you. I would go to the range before thinking anything is wrong.

Shoot a target at 10 yards. You may be surprised at what you find.

I have missed them that close too. At 10 yds, there is a good chance your bullet is well below the line of sight in your scope. I would not be surpirised if you were 1-1-2 inches low at 10 yds. If you held a little low, you would make it worse. It seem un-natural to aim high at 10 yds....but on a small target, that's what you need to do using a scope.
Did you hit low...? That big bullet must have left a big scorch mark that you could have found.
Also, this situation aside....it's ALWAYS a good idea to shoot on different power settings as this sometimes causes a shift in POI. At close range on game, especially deer, the difference is rarely enough to notice in a 10 inch kill zone however.

Just wanted to say you're right. Took out a target and recreated the shot...which I now realize was a lot closer than I thought. More like 15-feet! The bullet hit low, almost 2 1/2-inches low. Now I need to hold higher on what I now call the 5:30 groundhog..the time he comes out every evening. Working weekend so I won't get back out until at least Monday. Thanks for all the help, this board dishes out! Now i can't decide if I should try this one with a crossbow or stick to the Triumph. Of course he might have packed his bags and left town! Thanks again, Have a great day! Dave

I guess ya never know, how close you can get to a critter, and my pratice has always been at 25 to 100 plus yards. Weird when you can hit them that far and miss them at meer feet! Heck, don't even know where to find a place to practice at that range! Have a great day! Dave

Well I guess my groundhog hunting for the year has come to an end. The 5;30 groundhog never showed earlier this week, when I had the xbow ready. Tonight I took one at 80-yards with the inline and it does restore my confidence. ---see varmint threads. I'm now actively looking for a place to set up for archery, and am now looking during mid-day. The 5;10 groundhog is pictured on the varmint thread. Came out with a light rain falling. Fitting end to one season and am looking forward to the next! Have a great day! Dave

You missed a groundhog at 10 yards? Ha! I missed a deer at 10 feet from the base of my tree. Angle was very very very steep since I was 30 feet in a tree and I never tried that shot before. I can't even tell you if I shot over or under but am leaning to over. One of these days I'm going to take a big sheet of paper to the woods and lay it on the ground and climb 30 feet and see exactly where it hits. I also think I didn't have the gun tight to my shoulder and lean over far enough but thats besides the fact I shouldn't have shot that close anyways. Reason was she was gonna cross my walk in path anyways so I had nothing to loose but end result was nothing gained. Don't tell anybody about this now ok! :-)

As with most aircraft crashes and missed targets. It's operator error. 10 ga
