I got involved in a small confrontation today at the sporting goods store. Go figure There is no way possible to say that BH209 is the same cost or comparable to 777. Folks.... sorry it's not even close. From one zip code to the next 777 is all over the map on pricing. I actually have no idea why. I decided to go with online purchasing to be fair. I like to buy BH209 at Powder Valley. Why, because it's the cheapest place for me. And yes i will pay a hazmat fee. As you can see BH209 is $26.95 plus hazmat for 10 ounces of powder. www.powdervalleyinc.com/Now i take a look at 777 powder in both ffg and fffg. The price listed is $18.40 a pound (16 ounces) plus hazmat fee. You do the math. Not only is 777 almost $9.00 bucks a bottle cheaper, you get an extra 6 ounces as well. That's almost a half pound extra. As you can see, 777 is wayyyyyyyyyyyyyy cheaper per shot comparing apples to apples. Now dont get me wrong, i much rather shoot Bh209 for a few reasons. But i also realize i'm paying more to do so. I also know BH209 is a better powder for me. But, i can also achieve the same thing i do with BH209 with 777 ffg or even fffg. Or atleast the animal wont know the difference.

Was the confrontation an employee or a know-everything customer?

Was the confrontation an employee or a know-everything customer? Hi spaniel, nice to see you over here. It was with the owner of a local shop. I was looking at the new Remington shotgun.

And as you know I am a T7 user and have made this argument over and over. I really like BH but i am refusing to pay the price for 'Black Gold' when T7 does everything that for that I need, even though it does have some down sides in the eyes of many. 'Black Gold' has some down sides also. I have yet had it explained to me why IMR can produce IMR-4759, a bulky powder of very simular construction, for $20 a POUND and yet BH is such a hold-up...
I really believe it is our own fault.... We, many of us, in the ML community are willing to pay elevated prices to get something that is is built for a ML. Special primers come to mind immediately...

Mike, I'm sure having the powder imported here then labeled by WP isnt cheap. That sure doesn't help the cost at all.

I really think it's supply and demand. Actually BH209 has slipped in price during this year and may come down more as the year progresses. But I do like the stuff and have enough to get me though this hunting season....so for the time being I'm going to keep shooting it. But your comparison are absolutely correct. Have a great day! Dave

I have owned a Encore 209x50 since the first or second year T/C sold them. Since then I have shot way over fifteen hundred (1500) loads 100% with 150 grains of pelletised Pyrodex.
Then along came 777. I stopped using Pyrodex and used only 777. I shot over 3lbs of 3-F 777 out of my encore or over 300 shots.
Then along came Black Horn 209. I have gone through about 1 and a half bottles or around 15 ozs. I would not shoot pyrodex or 777 if you gave them to me FOR FREE and thats no BS.
The advantages BH209 have over Pyrodex and 777 are IMHO of such importance TO ME and my wishing to shoot a whole lot, that the cost of BH209 is off set by its immense advantages compared to the other BP subs I listed.
The single most important advantage BH209 gave me compared to Pyrodex and 777 was a feeling of 100% confidence because of BH209 gave me CONSISTENT repeat CONSISTENT accuracy out of my Encore to THE SAME POI shot after shot after shot. I was never able to achieve the level of repeatable accuracy with Pyrodex or 777 that I have with BH 209. One other thing I feel is a substantial advantage BH209 has over Pyrodex and 777 was BH209 gave me excellent superior accuracy with out any of the tempermentalness that i had to deal with in using pyrodex and 777.
I'm not saying anyone else should drop Pyrodex or 777 in favor of BH209, I'm just saying BH209 is and this is a matter of fact and not opinion, such a far superior BH sub in what is important to me, that I strongly feel it costing alto more is more than worth it.
The last four 100yrd 3-shot groups out of my Encore are equal to or better than the best I ever shot using anything else. The big difference was the fact I shot them all in a row on the same range session. Some thing I was never able to do in almost 1800 shots fired using other BP subs. This above all else has sold me on BH209.
It like all else in life it comes down to a matter of personal choice. For reasons of great importance TO ME, I will only shoot BH209 out of my Encore from now on.

i have no trouble getting 3 shots to touch @ 100 with pyro rs. I dont need that expensive powder. Pyrodex does the job just fine.
