Hello everyone. I was wanting a little advice. I have old T/C Thunderhawk .50 Cal Muzzle loader. It is a carbine. I just got it a couple of months ago and I was wondering what would be some good load combinations to use? So far I have tried the Pyrodex Pellets and 250 Grain Shockwave Sabots.
I was also thinking of getting the 209 conversion kit and using the new Blackhorn 209 Powder.
Does anyone have any good advice for me? Any help is greatly appreciated.

I have a .54 Thunderhawk bought in 1997-1998. I love it and it shoots well with regular black FFg powder at 100 gr.
The only thing I do not like is the lack of a breach plug. The only thing that separates the charge from the hammer is the nipple. The nipple has 3-4 rotations of small threads. After getting a Knight Disc and then a few Savages, it has made me think that the design is not super strong. Not sure what the pressure differences are with the subs.
This gun also has a 1:38 twist and only shoots stubby pistol bullets well. Anything longer and sleeker has tumbled for me. Another guy at our camp still uses his thunderhawk exclusively for over 10 years....it's a .50. He also can only shoot the 200-250 pistol bullets well and only uses black powder.
If you scope this gun, get a "protector" for your scope that covers the underside just above the primer. Alot of hot gases will strike your scope and if you shoot alot it will burn the finish of your scope in this area.

I have a FireHawk which is from the Thunderhawk era and differs only in the cocking lever and safety. I still use it yearly but just got a Savage. Try the powerbelts. My daughter uses 70 gr of 3F and a 225 gr powerbelt. I use 85 gr 3F and the 295 powerbelt. REAL boolits shoot good too, especially the 250 gr. Of course I'm shooting the Holy Black, prefer Swiss but Goex is OK too. Did a retrofit with the 209 ignition system, available from TC, and it is top notch too. Ditto on the scope protection, very necessary or you'll scour the finish right off the scope quickly. 10 ga
