Hey folks, Hope you can help save me some time on the bench. I picked up a knight elite in .45 cal . I am gonna work up a load for my son to deer hunt with this fall. He is 11 and says the gun feels good to him. What i am trying to achieve is a hunting load that is effective to 100-150 yds but don't want it to cross his eyes when he pulls the trigger. I have some blackhorn 209 that I would like to use. I would appreciate any bullet/sabot recomendations . Not much info on the blackhorn 209 for .45 cal . As always thanks in advance for your input. You made a great choice for your sons first ML. I would use this 185grn Lehigh bullet. Less recoil and the bullet works as good or better then all the rest. www.lehighbullets.com/products.asp?cat=23The 200grn XTP is another option you could use as well. 100grns of BH209 and either bullet will be light recoil and very effective to harvest Deer size game.

did you get a manual with your gun? what was max powder charge listed. i thought 110 grns was max but im going off memory. what i would recomend is start out at 50grns and work up to what is tollerable for him , accurate, and with in max and let that determin distance. if he flinches from recoil with higher load and accuracy suffers and he doesnt like it, no sence in shooting it.
i tried to find info on the 45 but could not find any. all i found was newer guns where listed at max of 150 grns of BP or sub but if using T-7 back that off by 15% per T-7 recomendations.

whyohe, 50grns of BH209 is way to light with light bullets. He would be better off switching to 777 fffg if he needed to go that low. That would not be 150yard load either.
The Knight Elite 45 has always been 150grns by volume of 777. The Knight Extreme might of been different at one time, not sure. I'm saying that based on a 200grn bullet.

thanks grouse. i was remembering from a friend who shot 45s all the time and one was a flinter and the other was a CVA i think so we are talking different beasts. i was just taught as a general rule BACK THEN110 grns max in a 45.

You are correct on some models. I think my Lyman Deer Stalker only calls for 110grns by volume of Goex.

how is your son handling the recoil of 90 grns? I'm betting you'll need 100-110 grns for accuracy.
got to thinking you might want to try a lighter bullet with that charge. maybe a 195 DC or a 200 grn SST or some thing. will probably help with the recoil too.

My bro has a .45 Knight and his best groups are achieved with two triple seven pellets, triple seven primer and Hornady 200 gr. SSTML. 3/4 inch groups at 100 yds. with Leupold 3X9 ML scope. He doesn't clean until after 7 to 10 shots. Good Luck
