So I just traded for a 45/70 smokeless Encore barrel. The gentleman had left the breech plug finger tight so I could inspect it and the bore. So this is my first 45 cal. barrel and I got to thinking, how tight should I make the breech plug. On my Savage MLII I have always just snugged it up.
This breech plug is smaller and has a shoulder. So do you all torque your breech plugs or just snug them up. Would appreciate any recommendations.
Thanks, Bill R.

I would say just tight enough to get it to lock up nicely.

Well mine is cut to where the primer doesn't sit all of the way into the recess. It stands a little proud and then is pushed into the pocket as I close it. Part of me likes this and part of me is concerned the whole primer is not supported in the chamber so to speak. I have the plug snugged up. Are any of yours like this or does your primer go all of the way in?

Some of them are designed and headspaced to seal around the primers forward circumferance . Tell us in detail what exactly is your application ?? I.E.- what gun and whose breech plug ?? The title of this post is Alot Different than your issue now described .

Sorry about that. I wasn't sure if I was getting it tight enough which could cause the primer to be proud. After realizing that I could not get it any tighter I saw that the primer was not seating all of the way into the breech plug. I think I am the third owner of this Encore barrel as the gentleman I bought it from wasn't sure who did the conversion. He mentioned SMH I think it was, which doesn't help me as I am not sure who that could be. I'm not knocking the breech plug but it doesn't have the finish of a factory made plug. There are milling marks where the flats were milled to create the hex head of the plug. The gentleman said it shot well and didn't mention any issues. So I think it was meant to meant to be proud. Does that help to identify the manufacturer? I would like to know in case I ever need a replacement.
