One year while moose hunting, I had an encounter with an angry mother bear. I didn’t contribute to this situation but was caught in the middle so to speak. While scouting along the edge of a small lake for moose signs, 2-cubs appeared out of nowhere working their way towards me. Then mother appeared who immediately stood upright growling. OH CRAP, I had nowhere to maneuver out of the way with a small lake behind me. With a full rush of adrenaline, I took my rifle’s safety off and shouldered my rifle in preparation for an act of self-defense. I didn’t want to kill the Sow as that would have signed the death warrant for her cubs but was ready to defend myself.
The cubs were about 25yds away and mother angrier than a disturbed hornet’s nest about 40yds. My finger was on the trigger and if she moved any closer in her angry state it was game over for her. I wasn’t going to let her get any closer to move into a charge position.
As luck would have it a cry from another location was heard and it was a third cub calling out. The cubs in front of me headed in that direction followed by mother. Boy did I breathe a sigh of relief that this situation was diffused. I thanked God that this didn’t become a tragic event.
This event happened over 30yrs ago but the memory is still strong. I believe the memory is strong because it could have been the end of yours truly and reminded me it was a situation; I really didn’t have control of.
As you can see, I’m still around to tell the story and grateful to still be alive to tell it. I have no fear of travelling in the Wild but a renewed respect for wildlife, especially the ones who can be considered dangerous.
