20 inch barrel converted 45-70 209 breech plug. 1-20 twist. What would the ideal saboted bullet weight? Have shot numerous combinations of <200 gr. Bullets with n110 ans similar powders. It just shoots patterns with lighter bullets.

I assume you have cleaned carbon out, is it a bushing or vent liner. Have you knurled bullets to grip sabots ? Veggie wad or no wad or wool wad ? So far with my NEF its not doing groups using veggie wads. Its more like extremely tight buckshot at 25 yds. So far the best group i have ever got was 2.250 " at a 100 yds. I have only shot 200 gr bullets from sabots. I have tried 230 n 250 sabot-less at 100 yds n they are buckshot groups. I am thinking of trying 225 gr Fury .40 cal with sabot

Sabots look good. I have tried 195 barnes, 200 gr. XTP, 200 GR. SHOCKWAVE, With and w/o veg wads and wool wads. I shot 30 to 35 gr. of n110, 4759, and 5744 CCI 209m primer. I have also shot 55 to 58 grains I-4198 with these bullets. I have not knurled or smooth sized any bullets. I have cleaned the barrel and breech plug. I had hoped to shoot lighter bullets and amounts of powder for a light recoiling load.

Yes I have the barrel drop. I will try the blue dot load. I realize I can get a full bore bullet sizer made from the barrel drop. I haven't had any experience with non saboted bullets either full sized or smooth sized. I prefer Barnes bullets. So do they have much spring back?

Usually the Barnes are dead on or a tad less. I am also fixing to test some of the xpb bullets in .451 200 gr. .451 225 gr n .451 250 gr. Will test in Jan. or Feb.

Knurling will probably give you the most benefit. I also anneal the 195 Gr Barnes to make them Softer for better obturation inside the sabot.

In my I have consistent <MOA groups in all of my conversions with the 200XTP/HSB sabot and the Slufoot load of 17gr Blue Dot. This chrono's at 1700 fps in my short barreled(16") H & R and 1800fps in my 22" H&R's. Recoil is light and knocks deer dead to 100yds nicely. For a small youngster in a blind over corn on small deer I use a 155XTP/HSB and 15gr of Blue Dot@1550fps in 16" barrel(Recoil is VERY, VERY light and it shoots <1" at 50yds.
Two other powders really shine in my conversions with both 200XTP/HSB sabot and 250XTP/Veg Wad Sabotless are: 42gr 5744 <1.5"@100yds 53gr H4198 =1 MOA The 200XTP/HSB's clock 2265fps and the 250XTP/VW run 2050fps. If you don't mind recoil my most accurate load is a 300XTP(non-Mag)/Wool Wad with 53gr of H4198 @ 1950fps, but I must warn you that in a 6.5# gun...It does rattle your teeth, so I haven't used it in last 5 years...

Another piece of advice...The thin jacketed bullets with completely flat heels(like the XTP's) shoot best out of my bores(Sabot-less and Saboted). I have yet to get any thicker jacketed rounded heel bullet(SST/FTX) or Barnes with it's slightly smaller diameter to ever shoot under 2 MOA. Most have key-holed or struggle to group under 4". This is after numerous attempts at: knurling, high pressure loads and tight fitting sabots. This I believe is the nature of H&R bores having a slight taper toward muzzle and probably won't pertain to your CVA. The only thing I can speculate on is that the Barnes 195BX and the SST's will most likely not group AS well as the XTP's unless you have a consistent bore on the Tight side, such as a Pacnor, McGowen or similar. IIRC, I believe many said the CVA bores were fairly true, just a bit on the loose side and I personally would look at the Fury or other thin jacketed Premiums(if you want better BC's than XTP's etc)rather than the Barnes or SST's. Just my .02

In my CVA Scout, I have shot a resized .410 Barnes 180gr XPB in a light blue sabot with a wad. Either N110 (what I use) or Bluedot will work. If using DI, work up carefully with the faster powders. Keep check on powder column height.
