Time For Reflection

Another Winter is upon us and my range time will be dormant until Spring. So, all I can do is look back to see what I’ve learned this past year or so. There is no better classroom than range time for observation of what a load does for performance. In the past I read about loads shooting under 1” at 100yds but when I first tried these loads, I couldn’t get the same results. Frustrating yes, but the real question is what am I missing? This then started my research for more knowledge about SML and sabots. Eventually I started to produce less than 1” groups at the range once I understood certain load principles.
Now back to recent days era. It’s been a struggle to get range time with this pandemic and range closure. But a few sessions did provide some interesting observations.
Shooters have commented that Rel-7 is a dirty powder whereas I found it to be a fairly clean burning powder. I won’t dispute the claims of others because I’m using a recessed BP that appears to really light that powder.
Another powder that won’t ignite with a standard Savage BP is H4227 (discontinued) but with the recessed BP it goes off like gangbusters. Again, the main factor is the recessed BP. So far, I’ve avoided duplex loads and nothing wrong with using duplex loads but prefer a single powder load if possible.
IMO the recessed BP is the way to go with the 10ML-II.
Another area of interest is shooting lighter bullets. My main concern was getting proper rotational spin. Lighter jacketed bullets have a shorter straight walled body meaning less sabot grip. Knurling and tighter bore fit remedied that. So, no issue here yet. Will see what happens as pressure, and velocity eventually increases.
Another area I would like to give some more attention to is different powders.
With so much testing I would like to do I feel handicapped by limited range access. It feels like I’m moving at a snail’s pace. Eventually I’ll cross the finish line, chuckle.
For now, I will just read others posts and hope to learn something new.
