Good Morning It's been a while since I posted here but have been a member for about 12 years. Earlier this year I had a reputable gunsmith convert an EAB 45-70 barrel for my Encore for one of my grandchildren. I have always been a 209 guy but had this one done with the HIS system using LMRPs. Been having trouble with the ignition not firing the load. Last time I shot, only every other one would fire. I have tried contacting the gunsmith several times but he will not respond to me. So much for customer service or the lack of. I am using H4198 powder, wool wads, Federal LRM primers #215 and 300 gr bullets due to the 1:14 barrel twist. Thought this HIS system was the THING now and not interested in duplexing. Any thoughts will be greatly appreciated. Thanks.
Barry

I know you have checked everything involved with the ignition. It boils down to primers throwing the fire into the powder load. Firing pin spring weak ? Bad primers? Not enough resistance on load ? Powder old/damp ? Just throwing this out there n hope you get it working right

See what happens with knurled 200 XTPs or SSTs, wool wad and 35g of VV110, or 4759 or 5744. What bushing size? A larger bushing size might help.
Twist. I’ve found that fast twists cause no difficulty with short bullets; rather, they just make the sweet spots much wider.

Barrycuda I would be interested is seeing the primers after they are struck by the firing pin. Both fired and unfired loads.

I have a picture of the primers but don't know how to post it. I have no problem with accuracy just consististy of ignition. I may change the hammer and firing pin springs.

How is the bullet fit? How many grains of powder are you using? How clean are the modules? Since you are using the HIS, you might get more responses over on that Message Board.

Starting load of 58 gr H4198. New modules. Good bullet fit. Currently trying 300 xtp. I own 7 other SMLs so am very familiar.

My fail to fire issue, back in the day was with IMR 4227. Finally figured out it wasn't the powder or primer, but me shooting too fast. This caused the sabot plastic to get soft and not seal well enough to ignite the powder. Kind of sounds like you have a similar sealing problem, I use 0.060 veggie wads they may work better for you than wool wads. Knurling may help too as others have mentioned.
