New member here, but there was an old thread a dozen years ago about getting a manufacturer to produce sabots for .40 cal muzzleloaders. A fella by the name of Mossyhorns indicated he could/would get the ball rolling through a connection he had in Missouri. Anybody know if this idea ever came to fruition? With the advent of the new Super .40 cals., in particular the CVA Paramount, I’d want the ability to load quality .358 rifle bullets instead of the overpriced, full bore Powerbelts CVA Is touting for use in this rifle. Id prefer the .40 over the .45 because of the thinner “gasket” a .40 has over the .45. Otherwise I’ll simply purchase the .45. Thanks in advance for any wisdom on this subject. Boone.

Thanks, Mossy, for the reply. Do you remember this conversation way back when? I may have mis-spoke when I mentioned you as the one spearheading the development of the .40 sabot, but you were definitely in the conversation about it. What are your thoughts about it today, now that there are at least 2 or 3 .40’s out there, with the CVA appearing to be a home run, IMO. I live in Iowa, and have determined since the allowance of straight wall cartridges, that either the Winchester.375 magnum or a .414 super mag are about the very best overall cartridges legal in Iowa for large Whitetail bucks. This New .40 Paramount would shame either one of those terrific deer killers. Don’t know how thin the sabot can get, but there are a multitude of terrific .375 bullets out there, many with outstanding sectional densities, that could be driven at fairly eye popping velocities by muzzleloader standards anyway. And also of course, terrific .358 rifle bullets driven at even higher velocities. Prolly a true, genuine 400 yard whitetail rifle in the hands of a good marksman. Twice the distance of what just a few short years ago was the holy grail for muzzleloader Ad copy, a 200 yard gun. All we need to make this happen is a little piece of plastic. Could prolly get close to this with PR bullets 45/.357 sabot, but I’d prefer a jacketed .358 than Mr. Epps all lead PR’s. Your thoughts a dozen years later…..

Sir, the name in yellow in the avatar is the users name. Mossy horns in white is only related to the amount of posts the person has posted so there is lots of mossy horns. If the 40 cals were more popular, maybe the 40 sabot would be made available. I think most commercial gunmakers with 40 caliber guns have a proprietary type of sabot or skirting and that will most likely keep a sabot manufacturer from offering a 40 sabot
